Now on View Ateliers Courbet Chelsea gallery Pierre Yves Guenec unveiling exhibition of the ‘Anatomies’ series. ‘Anatomies’ traces the French artist and master metalsmith’s ongoing study of the osteological architecture of the human body: its morphology, articulation, movement, and resting attitudes. Carved in wood, stone, or cast in bronze, the resulting series presents five functional sculptures, each drawn from the skeleton’s anatomy.

The result of five-year long material research and dedicated upcycling processes, J39.5 is a series of unique chairs made (almost) entirely from upcycled materials and parts of Børge Mogensen’s iconic J39 chairs, relics sourced from vintage shops throughout Japan. Too treasured to discard and too costly to repair, the chairs were broken apart by the studio, which salvaged each reusable leg and ground the wood of those that couldn’t be saved into paper, then transformed it into cord. The rope in the new iterations may once have been the leg of an old J39. The resulting collection is a compelling manifesto for design’s contemporary role, grounded in upcycling and environmental principles.

So pleased to announce the unveiling exhibition of AtMa’s J39.5 now on view by appointment at Crosby new private gallery:

Glenn Adamson “an ingenious and masterful essay in ad hoc design. Over a period of four years, the Japanese design studio AtMa gathered broken examples of Børge Mogensen’s J39 chair (1947). Reacting to the individual features of the incomplete objects, they transmuted the Platonic language of this modernist classic into a playful postmodern series, each one unique, each suggesting a slightly different mode of use. In one object, two chairs converge at angles to form the base of a seat; in another, a cascade of crest rails make the chair’s shell. The project speaks to our moment just as Mogensen’s original did to his, indexing our digital era through its title (suggestive of a software update) and core strategy of upcycling at a time of climate crisis.“ AtMa_inc
