“Ants and Ice” by local artist Amber Rahe prints are now available to be purchased at Sidetracked locally in Mankato. They are 11x14 and $25 each. 100% of proceeds will go directly towards local efforts to support our community members in need. For those of you that are out of state, prints are available on my website where a portion of the proceeds will go to those same local organizations.
Over the last few months I’ve watched some of the most vulnerable people in my community, state and even across the country be under constant threat and stress. I’ve also been inspired watching members of my community and state come together to defend, support and protect each other. This constant disparity between fear and violence and hope and compassion put a visual into my mind that I had to paint.
I kept thinking of the painting The Raft of the Medusa by Theodore Gericault. The original painting was based on the sinking of a French naval ship in 1816. The sinking of the ship was caused by an incompetent captain who was given the job because of political favor. When the ship sank, 150 survivors quickly built a raft and set adrift into the ocean. They were on the raft for 13 days and in that time they threw people overboard, killed each other, and ate the dead. Only 15 people survived in the end.
I wanted to mimic the composition of the Raft of the Medusa to symbolize the incompetence of the current administration and the vivid brutality and desperation of the situation. I used the colors of the Minnesota flag and ants to represent the relentless and powerfully supportive community response that followed.
