Delilah is so gentle with kittens as well as people puppies. Winnie (blonde bringer of peace in Welsh) can't figure out why the other cats hate her. But she has her large, geriatric dog for naps and playtime. Her markings are lynx point Siamese, but I suspect she's a mix from the neighbor's clowder 1/2 mile away through the woods. I'm still amazed at how she found her way in the rain to cry outside our cat door like tiny Ivan did 10 years ago. Despite the fact that I said I'd not take in any pet that would outlive me, she's a welcome addition to our home.

With traditional purchased reeds, traditional techniques and styles suggested themselves. So I learned them and even made some baskets with lids that actually fit. Yet again not leaving well enough alone, I explored how to make the bands of color wavy instead of straight, and then whatever that last photo is.
All of these baskets and more will be available at the Baker Creek Tulip Festival near Mansfield Missouri on Sunday and Eclipseday.

Morning walks turned into foraging safaris. Everything I noticed seemed to say "weave me". So I collected grasses, small grape vines, and flower stems. Even the tiny ends of iris leaves and the remains of daffodil flower stems suggested their additions to my basket designs. The obsession was in full gallop by mid Summer.

With conventional materials, I looked to traditional designs like this egg collecting basket. The cat claimed it and it hasn't seen an egg since. This morning I needed something for foraged daffodil stems. The cat is not amused.

I blame my friends. Early last Summer one wanted some stinging nettle removed from around the entry door, and another lauded the many uses of the plant. After eye opening research on line, I was intrigued. Not one to leave well enough alone, I dyed some of those hard won fibers and made my first coil basket.
Yet another friend led me astray with a bag of landscaping pine needles that turned into a small box with a fitted lid. I was, of course, compelled to send off my first order for traditional basket making reed.
I was hooked!
