Big restock in the self-serve floral cooler this weekend! We've got tons of $25 mixed dahlia bouquets, and we also have sunflowers available -- any 5 stems for $10. Only four more weeks of fresh local flowers -- come get 'em while we have 'em!

Cooler is inside our garage at 146 W 400 N in Manti and is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day but Sunday. Venmo or cash.

August is weird for flower farmers.

You dream of this kind of abundance all winter, and when it's actually here, it can get pretty overwhelming. Early mornings day after day after day, long evenings and nights with headlamps on, trying to harvest in the all the months of hard work in a very compressed time frame...it can kind of make you feel like you're going a little crazy 🤪🤪🤪

Yet at the same time, you look around and see THIS -- this unreal beauty right in front of your eyes, your undeniable gratitude that THIS is your office, that THESE flowers are literally paying your mortgage and buying your food and making it so your kids can take soccer and dance and buy books to read for fun.

Farming is both beautiful AND hard. It is both incredibly rewarding AND incredibly demanding. I absolutely adore it, and it can absolutely drive me bonkers.

Kind of like a lot of the most important things in life :)

It's easy to get bogged down by the weeds and logistics, but every now and then, I just have to stop and take it all in.

When I started the farm in 2021, I didn't realize how much courage it would require to bet on myself. When we made the choice during our third season in to take it full time for both my husband and me, we REALLY didn't know how much courage it would take to bet on both of us, and to trust in the divine inspiration that had kept nudging us along in this direction.

You sometimes don't even know what you're saying yes to when you have the courage to go for a dream, but one thing is for sure - win or lose, triumph or fail, future you will be forever grateful that you actually just WENT FOR IT.

There's a lot of things I love about living in a small town. One of those things is how much the general population makes an effort to support local.

When you live in the country, you understand a little more intimately that if you don't support local businesses, they might not be able to stick around, and then you literally might lose access to that service or product.

We're so grateful that we've had so much local support from the get-go. It has allowed us to keep growing year over year for 6 years, and we love getting to spread the beauty of locally grown flowers.

With August comes almost zero time for posting on social media, but the flowers are flowering, this new echibeckia is rocking my world, and yes, we are keeping the self-serve cooler stocked if you're needing a pick-me-up to get yourself motivated for the back to school insanity.

SANPETE COUNTY: OUR SELF-SERVE FLORAL COOLER IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!!!

In case you're new to our self-serve cooler, it is located in our garage at 146 W 400 N in Manti. Our driveway is a bit packed at the moment with mushroom compost, but you just walk straight down our driveway between the fence and the super sacks of compost, and you'll find our self-serve cooler on your left.

Our grab 'n go bouquets are located on the right side of the cooler (both top and bottom shelf this season), and each wrapped bouquet is $25. You can pay using the Venmo code on the door, or by leaving cash in the jar marked "Cash" on the shelf.

We've provided materials to wrap the stems if you're transporting the stems over a long distance -- simply grab one of the ziploc bags and a paper towel, dip the paper towel in some of the water at the bottom of the bucket, wrap it around the stems, put the ziploc bag over it, and secure with a rubber band. This should keep it fresh until you can get it in water at home!

These make a great gift for yourself or someone else, and the flowers change every week depending on what's in season.

Our bouquets this week feature sunflowers, echinacea, perennial scabiosa, phlox, and snapdragons, and they are bright, textural, and have just a hint of fragrance thanks to the few stems of mountain mint and fennel tucked in there.

We'd always talked in past seasons about how we really should net our snapdragons. We'll, this year we finally did it! And not a second too soon...we have had CRAZY wind pressure this year!

But thanks to all the support netting, loss due to snapping or weird growth patterns has been minimal, and we're enjoying the best (and most upright!) snap crop of our lives.

Here's something I know to be true for me...

When life gets insane and really hard things happen, I sometimes lose sight of the good around me because I am paralyzed in survival mode. Sometimes this is a very necessary built-in defense mechanism to help us focus on literally staying alive, but in a culture with so much information around us (much of it saturated in fear to garner more attention), we start to perpetuate that high alert state indefinitely. We start to literally feel unable to notice the good, feel joy, or appreciate what's going right.

When I notice myself getting swept up in the news or in feeling like the world is spinning out of control, I remind myself of a few things:

1 - Empathy can become toxic when it isn't coupled with action. When we're feeling all of someone else's pain but then doing nothing to help, that is a recipe for anxiety and helplessness.

For me, I remind myself that my own hardest moments have made me who I am, and that I often had support to help me get through. So if my heart is breaking because of another tragedy, I remind myself that this can become a crucial part of their path and to think of all the growth they will be able to experience from it.

Then I ask myself how I can help - donate to a fundraiser? Raise awareness? Bring a meal in? Take flowers over? The action of doing pulls us out of fear and into connection, which is what all of us really need to make it through (instead of people feeling our pain but then keeping to themselves).

2 - When a tragedy happens, I don't think it's culture or happenstance that prompts us to send or seek out flowers. In our darkest moments, we NEED those reminders of beauty, grace, and support. Flowers are powerful because they are a tangible reminder that good things are still around us, that someone thought of us and wanted us to feel comfort.

If the world stops seeking out beauty and goodness, we've let their opposites win.

And remember the words of Mr. Roger's - "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'"

Flower Farming Recap, Weeks 28-29 -

We are officially entering peak season at the farm! Our summer abundance always begins with the snapdragons showing off, which will quickly be followed by all our other summer crops, like celosia, scabiosa, lisianthus, and dahlias. Our walk-in cooler is currently jam-packed from wall to wall with buckets, and we're working feverishly from the earliest hours of sunlight to the latest hours of evening twilight to try and harvest it all in.

Here's a quick rundown of what we've been up to, in pictures:

1-2: Snaps, snaps, snaps! Snapdragons are our #1 crop in both productivity and revenue, and we grow about every variety and color you could want. They love our high altitude, slightly cooler climate, and every year we only plant more and more. Love, love, love snaps!!

3: Our market haul last week. As you can tell, mostly snapdragons here again!

4-5: Our latest couple batches of subscriptions. Now that our sunflowers have finally come on, we're ready to once again open the self-serve cooler this coming week! More details to come soon.

6: Ever since we joined the Utah Flower Market, annual phlox has become one of our most important crops. Like snapdragons, it thrives in our climate, and we'll be cutting on it from now through mid-October. It takes awhile to get it to a usable height, but once it's there, it sure is a heavy producer!

7-8: The drought has been truly awful this year. Our lawn is mostly completely brown and died back by this point, but as we have to keep our crops alive in order to support our family, we've been having to often hand water using culinary water, which gets very, very expensive. We're still watering far less than usual. It's been an interesting thing to see what crops have held up okay to that, and which are definitely struggling. However, we did get a really good rainfall on one day, which then graced us with a double rainbow, to boot. Both were much appreciated!!

8: Our second oldest, Mathias, got baptized last week! It was a beautiful day spent with grandparents and a little bit of extended family, and we sure loved getting the chance to shower our curly-haired boy with extra love and attention.

And that about does it for the last two weeks! The next couple weeks are much, much busier, so it should be fun to report back for the next recap :)

I wish this wasn't a conversation we needed to have...I wish it was self-evident (blatantly obvious, even) that a handmade product or personalized service should not be expected to cost the same as a mass-produced commodity, but here we are.

To the many customers who DO appreciate that difference, bless you. For reals. You are the reason our farm continues to exist and grow from year to year.

And if this is a new concept for you, guess what? We can still be friends! We can have tough conversations and disagree and still respect each other.

Basically, this is not me trying to argue that my flowers are affordable for everyone (they're not). So your arguments about the rising cost of living don't make sense here.

What I am suggesting is that before you criticize a small business for their prices that you take a beat and ask yourself some questions about the service they're providing you. How many years did they spend on honing their craft? How much money did they have to spend on education, supplies, and operational costs? How much stress are they taking off your shoulders? How much convenience, beauty, and service are they offering you? And are you willing to go through the same? If not, you don't really have the grounds to be criticizing what they're charging in order to stay in business.

When I think about businesses in this way, I want to throw my arms around every single person who does their job well, who shows up with heart and effort and therefore enriches my life as a result. I want to look you in the eye and tell you how much gratitude I have that I can call on you to fix our tractor or make a wedding cake or draw blood from my arm or cut my hair. Because you spent all the time to learn that, it has allowed me to be able to spend all the time to learn this. Thank you to all such people everywhere. I see you, and I appreciate you more than I can say!
