The 1812 Shoppe Custom Woodworks My name is Craig Vollmer. I am the designer, craftsman, and proprietor of The 1812 Shoppe Custom Woodworks. What can I build for you?

My father started The 1812 Shoppe in 1970 in Sacketts Harbor, NY, one of the historic Lake Ontario naval sites of the War of 1812, and company namesake. He started out finishing, refinishing, repairing, & re-upholstering furniture. He dreamed of having a more substantial workshop and making furniture; a dream that, unfortunately, went unfulfilled before his sudden and untimely death. I spent my childhood helping my father in his shop; he taught me how to use tools and I started making things out of wood there; my Uncle Ken was a talented woodworking hobbyist who was also an inspiration for me. These two men kindled my passion for working wood. For nearly 25 years I have been working wood, investing in and equipping my own shop. Now located in Chautauqua County, NY where the first naval battle of the War of 1812 took place just offshore on Lake Erie, it is fitting that The 1812 Shoppe should live on there. Today, The 1812 Shoppe produces high quality home decor, furniture, and architectural wood products, continuing to be defined by the same important principles demonstrated by my father – a thorough personal touch, quality workmanship, and attentive customer service. I offer my own product designs as well as custom builds.

From Side Venture to Full-Time Craftsmanship

Craig Vollmer started The 1812 Shoppe in 2021 as a part-time woodworking business. Drawing on his background in forestry and knowledge of northeastern woods, he creates handcrafted pieces, from jewelry boxes and Bluetooth speakers to custom tables and cabinets. As the business grew, Craig moved into full-time entrepreneurship.

Craig has worked with the us throughout different stages of that journey, first while launching the business in Chautauqua County and later with the North Central SBDC after relocating to Marathon. Along the way, he has used advising and research support to develop his business plan, build and improve his website, strengthen his marketing, and refine his overall business strategy.

Today, The 1812 Shoppe continues to create custom wood products for customers near and far, combining Craig’s forestry experience with a focus on quality craftsmanship and one-of-a-kind work.

A much needed upgrade to my shop entrance. This is where I park the cargo trailer I use for furniture deliveries and hauling my wares and gear to art shows. It was just grass before and was getting rutted, tore up, wet, and the grass was dying back. It was a pain to mow around too. And it makes a nice firm spot to set up saw horses to work outside when necessary. What a treat!
