I recently acquired US STATE, CITY,and WORLD maps published by J H COLTON in his 1860 edition (161 year old) GENERAL ATLAS. Colton previously published a 2 volume set of maps in 1855 and 1856, respectively using engraved steel plates with hand coloring, undoubtedly involving child labor in his “ATLAS OF THE WORLD “. The maps of Scotland, Ireland, and California, with copyright dates of 1855 were part of his 1860 edition of his GENERAL ATLAS, believed to be his first single volume atlas and using in these instances the 1855 steel plates. I like to explain it this way. The data on the maps are from 1855 but the paper they are printed on is from 1860. These maps as well as other maps, steel engravings, oils, prints, and Denton chromolithographs may be viewed every Saturday and Sunday between 11 and 5 @ 1 North Street in village of Marcellus. If inconvenient call David @ 315 415 7967 or email me @ [email protected]. Framing services available.

This week I am recognizing a rare framed 1871 hand colored map of of NEW YORK CITY from ASHER AND ADAMS “NEW TOPOGRAPHIC ATLAS AND GAZZETTEER before the Brooklyn Bridge. It has new acid free white core black mat, and foam board backing. The glass is sealed to the backing with tape to minimize the infiltration of dirt and specs. As in the case for all my framing, the map is hinged at the top, not glued down to the backing, to allow the map to move during changes in humidity and temperature, as it will move. The frame is late 19 th century “ quartered oak” that has been restored, renewed, refinished and sealed with a mixture of pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil, and polyurethane varnish. It is 17 3/8th” by23 1/8”. May be seen at my gallery North Street in village of Marcellus. Open every Saturday and Sunday between 11 and 5. If that is inconvenient call David @ 315 415 7967 or email me @ peatltd@ aol.com. Framing services available.

A client brought in a 176 year old x stitch “SAMPLER” to be reframed. It was made by an eleven year old young lady in 1845 from Sandwich, Massachusetts. The client was given this historic piece of art by a neighbor and was having it reframed correctly to be a gift to a friend in the Midwest. She was agreeable to participate in the process along the way from learning what may be found when the original piece was opened up, materials I was going to use, how I was going to proceed and ultimately the frame she thought appropriate for this piece of art. She chose to have it framed in 100 year old American “wormy” Chestnut. The Chestnut was purchased from Memphis Hardwoods and milled to my profile specifications and sealed with boiled linseed oil and a mixture including polyurethane varnish. My gallery is open every Saturday and Sunday between 11:00 and 5:00. If that’s not convenient call David @ 315-415-796 or email me @ peatltd@ aol.com.

This week I am sharing an original 165 year old hand colored map of NEW YORK CITY AND ADJACENT CITIES from J H Colton’s atlas prior to the Civil War w/ a CR date of 1855. What is worthy to note; there is no location or mention of OHMSTEAD’S CENTRAL PARK, opened in 1857 or Brooklyn Bridge, started in 1869 and completed in 1883. The piece has the Colton characteristic border and is a double plate. It has new foam board back, hardware but old picture wire. The frame is 2 1/2” wide, quartered oak, believed to be fumed, that was rescued from a partly destroyed frame located in Newport, RI. It is 21” by 30 3/4”. May be viewed at my gallery @ 1 North Street in village of Marcellus every Saturday and Sunday between 11 and 5. If that time is inconvenient call David @ 315 415 7967 or email me @ peatltd@ aol.com. Framing services available.

This week I am sharing a newer print on quality card stock of a late 19 th or early 20th century photograph of CLINTON SQUARE AND ERIE CANAL BOAT, in all their glory. The piece has new white core black mat, foam board backing, and hardware. The glass is pre 1900 with its checks and imperfections, but not original to the Victorian Oak & Gesso Frame in great condition for its age. Outside dimensions are 23 1/2” by 26 1:2”. May be seen at my gallery @ 1 North Street in village of Marcellus that is open every Saturday and Sunday between 11 and 5. If that is inconvenient please call David @ 315-415-7967 or email me @ [email protected]. Custom framing services available.

This week I am sharing a framed original 1902 colored map of the northeast quadrant of the ADIRONDACK PRESERVE and section within the BLUELINE. It includes Saranac Lake, Middle Saranac Lake, Upper Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, and Lake Champlain. What is interesting for you “hikers” is I have identified 22 of the 46 HIGH PEAKS you have to conquer before you can become a 46 rrr. The map is framed in 3” QUARTERED OAK w/ Caribbean Rosewood inlay. The map is hinged at the top to allow movement during changes in temperature and humidity, as it will move. May be seen at my gallery every Saturday and Sunday between 5 and 11 @ 1 North Street in village of Marcellus . If that isn’t convenient call David @ 315 415 7967 or email Peatltd@ aol.com. If you need a frame repaired, bring it in. Perhaps I may be able to repair it.

Last week significant interest was shown in my post of CROWN MILLS, MILL #2, Birdseye view and building diagram published in 1926 by FIA for insurance purposes. I will limit my post this week to information about the 100+ year old American Chestnut wood that I have framed this historic Marcellus piece of art with. Over 125 years ago there were 4 billion Chestnut trees growing in Eastern US. They were the tallest and fastest growing trees in the forests. During the late 19th and early 20th century the blight fungus struck down the Chestnut forest to the degree that “there has been essentially no chestnut lumber sold in the US for decades”. Memphis Hardwoods found some strips of chestnut in a barn. I purchased it and had it milled to my 2” profile. The surface of the wood shows the worm holes, a result of the devastating blight. I have treated the frame with linseed oil and a mixture of pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil and polyurethane varnish. It can be seen at my gallery @ 1 North Street in village of Marcellus open every Saturday and Sunday between 11 and 5. Framing services available.

This is a 1926 “Birdseye” view & Building diagram of CROWN MILLS- MILL # 2, village of Marcellus where 19th century brick and mill, multi story industrial strutures were razed and replaced w/ condominiums, elderly housing, and the Marcellus Library. The only remaining building is the former office that has been repurposed for residential use. Published as Plate # 62 by FIRE INSURANCE ASSOCIATION, who produced some of the most accurate and detailed drawings of early to middle 19 century buildings. It is unfortunate that there is some water damage at the bottom of this piece of art. This is an example of history for Marcellus that will be framed shortly and exhibited at my gallery at 1 North Street in village of Marcellus- open every Saturday and Sunday between 11:00 and 5:00. If those hours are not convenient, call David @ 315-415-7967 or email me at peatltd@ aol.com. Framing services with antique refinished wood, available.

This is a recent acquisition of The Hudson River and Vicinity that has a significant amount of history associated with it. It was included in “Hudson River Guide and Tour to the Springs” published by J H Colton & John Disturnell both noted publishers of maps and atlases in the mid to late 19th century. The map was originally drawn by David Burr, the publisher of the first county atlas of NYS IN 1829. As noted on the bottom of the map are the names of Tanner and Disturnell. Henry Tanner is another famous publisher of maps during the same period. The map was engraved by S Stiles, yet another famous engraver and publisher. This map gives recognition to 5 (five) of the most recognized people in the map trade during the mid to late 19th century. I have framed the map that is hand colored and is 5” by 24”. It may be seen at my gallery @ 1 North Street in village of Marcellus every Saturday and Sunday between 11 and 5. If that isn’t convenient please call me at 315 415 7967 or my email address is peatltd@ aol.com. Framing services available.
