🌼 Save the Pollinators, Save Our Plates

By Malcolm Steele, MPH

Founder, Big Steele Urban Farm

When folks talk about pollinators, they usually stop at bees — but that’s just the beginning. Butterflies, hummingbirds, wasps, beetles, bats, and even ants all play a role in keeping nature (and your garden) thriving.

🐝 Why Are Pollinators Disappearing?

Pollinators are vanishing — and fast. Here’s why:

❌ Pesticides – Neonicotinoids and glyphosate-based sprays are directly linked to bee mortality and impaired navigation.

❌ Loss of habitat – Urban sprawl, monoculture farms, and deforestation reduce access to flowering plants and nesting spaces.

❌ Climate change – Warmer winters and disrupted seasonal patterns confuse migration, reproduction, and food availability.

❌ Disease and parasites – Mites, viruses, and fungal infections are wiping out hives and weakening pollinator health.

❌ Poor biodiversity – A lack of plant variety leads to nutritional deficiencies in pollinators, just like in humans.

🌻 Why Flowers Matter:

Planting diverse flowers isn’t just pretty — it’s essential for survival. Flowers attract pollinators, and pollinators keep our food system alive.
No pollinators = no fruit, no seeds, no harvest.

🌱 Balanced Ecosystems Feed Us All:

When you plant flowers, skip chemical sprays, and protect wild areas, you’re not just helping insects — you’re restoring balance. A healthy garden is a pollinator party.
That’s why we keep it real at Big Steele Urban Farm: soil-first, flowers always, no poison.

🌍 What You Can Do:

✔️ Plant native flowers & herbs
✔️ Avoid pesticides — especially neonicotinoids
✔️ Create pollinator houses or safe spaces
✔️ Diversify your garden — more color = more pollinators
✔️ Support local farms and conservation groups

🌿 Too many good plants get lost after transplanting. Here’s how to keep yours alive and thriving. 🌿

If you’ve ever moved a plant from a pot to the ground and watched it droop, stall, or die… you’re not alone.

It’s called transplant shock and it’s totally avoidable.

The fix? A little-known secret called Vitamin B-1 (Thiamine).

✨ Here’s what it does:
✔️ Helps roots grow faster
✔️ Cuts recovery time in HALF
✔️ Keeps your moringa (and other plants) thriving from day one

🪴 How to Use It
✅ Mix 1 capful with 1 gallon of water (check label for exact ratio)
✅ Water the plant right after transplanting
✅ Repeat in 5–7 days

💡 Bonus Tip: Use B-1 for seed starts, repots, and stressed plants, too.

🌱 Hibiscus Roselle care made simple! You don’t have to be a pro to grow this beauty. Here’s how to get started:

1. Starting Seeds (or Direct Sowing):
🌞 Soak seeds overnight and plant them in a warm spot indoors, or sow them outdoors once the soil is warm enough.
2. Care for Sprouts:
🌿 Keep the soil moist (but not soggy) and water gently as your seeds sprout. Add a little fertilizer once they grow a few leaves!
3. Ready to Plant Outside or Pot Up:
🌞 For outdoor planting, pick a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Make sure to space them 3-4 feet apart!
4. Water and Fertilize for Strong Growth:
💧 Water deeply, keeping them hydrated. Fertilize every 6-8 weeks to encourage strong growth and vibrant flowers.
5. Prune and Harvest:
✂️ Trim dead stems and harvest the bright red flowers for tea, jam, or just to admire.
