Tile can cost more upfront than some flooring options, but it can also be one of the best long-term values.

A properly installed tile floor can last for decades with very little maintenance. When you spread that initial cost over 20, 30 or even 40 years, the cost per year can be surprisingly low.

Sometimes the least expensive floor today is not the least expensive floor over the life of your home.

True or False?

A thicker floor is always a better floor.

FACT: Thickness alone doesn’t determine quality. Construction, locking system, wear layer, density and manufacturer quality all matter.

There are also times when a thinner floor is the better choice for installation. Existing floor heights, transitions to adjoining rooms, doors, appliances and other site conditions can all affect which thickness works best.

The goal isn’t always to choose the thickest floor — it’s to choose the right product for the space and the installation.

How Long Should Things in Your Home Actually Last?

My dryer decided it was DONE this weekend 😩 — which got us thinking about how long we should realistically expect the big-ticket items in our homes to last.

Here are some general averages:

🧺 Washer: 5–15 years
👕 Dryer: 8–14 years
❄️ Refrigerator: 10–18 years
🍽️ Dishwasher: 8–10 years
🔥 Stove/Range: 14–18 years
🌡️ HVAC: roughly 12–20 years, depending on the system

And since we're flooring people… floors have life expectancies, too!

🏡 Carpet: 5–15 years
🏡 LVP/Vinyl: 10–25 years
🏡 Laminate: 10–30 years
🏡 Tile: 50+ years — often much longer
🏡 Hardwood: 30–100+ years and can often be refinished rather than replaced

Of course, quality, installation, maintenance, pets, kids and everyday wear and tear can make those numbers vary quite a bit.

Sometimes things last forever. Sometimes your dryer picks a random Saturday to say, “That’s enough.” 😂
