What Is Shoe Mold / Quarter Round

A small, curved molding installed along the baseboard to cover the expansion gap at the edge of certain types of flooring.

What's the Difference Between Shoe Molding and Quarter Round?

They may look similar, but they're not quite the same!

Quarter Round – Just as the name suggests, it's shaped like one-quarter of a circle. It's equally tall and wide, giving it a fuller, more rounded appearance.

Shoe Molding – Also called base shoe, it's generally taller than it is wide, with a slimmer, more subtle profile. It sits closer to the baseboard for a less noticeable finish.

Which is better? Both are used along baseboards to cover the expansion gap often required with new flooring. Shoe molding typically creates a sleeker look, while quarter round offers a slightly larger profile. We install much more shoe mold for our clients.

❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY: What's the difference between QUARTZ and QUARTZITE countertops?

We were just asked this question by a customer, and it's a good one! They sound alike, but they're actually very different!

QUARTZ – Engineered Stone
✅ Made from natural quartz minerals combined with resins and pigments
✅ Nonporous, stain resistant and never needs sealing
✅ Wide variety of colors and patterns
✅ Easy to maintain
⚠️ Can be damaged by excessive heat, so use trivets!

QUARTZITE – Natural Stone
✅ Quarried from the earth, just like granite and marble
✅ Each slab is unique, with beautiful natural veining
✅ Extremely hard and more heat resistant than quartz
✅ Often resembles marble, but is more durable
⚠️ Requires sealing to help prevent staining

💰 WHAT ABOUT COST? Both are premium countertop choices, but quartzite is often more expensive due to the cost of the stone and fabrication.

THE BOTTOM LINE: If you want beauty with minimal maintenance, quartz is a great choice. If you love the one-of-a-kind beauty of natural stone, quartzite may be worth the extra investment!

What Does “Wire-Brushed Hardwood” Mean?

Wire-brushed hardwood has been lightly scraped with a wire brush during manufacturing to remove some of the softer wood grain and bring out the natural texture of the harder grain.

The result? A floor with more character, depth and a slightly textured feel.

Pros:
• Helps hide everyday scratches, scuffs and dents
• Great for busy households and homes with pets
• Adds warmth and a more natural, less “perfect” look
• Texture can make dirt and minor wear less noticeable

Cons:
• The textured surface can hold a little more dust than a completely smooth floor
• Not the best choice if you prefer a sleek, polished look
• Deep texture can be slightly harder to clean than smooth hardwood
