A note from Tung Chiang:
The relationship between art, design, and craft is always on our minds at Heath.
For Design Series, I created from the perspective of a designer—a role that I’ve happily occupied for much of my life.
In my new Heath Clay Studio show, Circle, Triangle, Rectangle, I chose to shift my perspective and think like a potter: reconnecting with the fundamentals of my craft by throwing, trimming, and glazing each piece myself.
The show’s name comes from the basic geometric building blocks that we often think of as foundational elements of design.
Rather than rush past these simple shapes in pursuit of complexity, I wanted to slow down and explore the furthest reaches of their expressiveness, variability, and beauty.
In doing so, I was able to reconnect with my materials, allowing their idiosyncracies—the plasticity of the clay, the unpredictability of the glaze—to lead the way.
Each piece in Circle, Triangle, Rectangle reflects everything I know and love about pottery—and represents an organic collaboration between the clay, the glaze, and my own two hands.
