Today’s spotlight:
Moonflower (Ipomoea alba) 🤍🌙
This big white bloom waits until evening to open. Moonflower is a climbing vine related to morning glories, but its flowers open around dusk and usually close the following morning.
Its fragrant blooms provide nectar for night-flying moths. There’s a whole other shift of pollinators working after dark!
Some interesting facts about moonflowers:
• The flowers unfold from tightly twisted buds and can open in just a few minutes
• Blooms can reach about 6 inches across
• Each flower lasts only one night, with new buds taking their turn throughout the blooming season
