Tempered glass is built to be tough, roughly four to five times stronger than standard glass. So when it breaks all at once into a pile of small pebbles, it can feel like it came out of nowhere.

It usually didn't. A small chip on an edge, stress from how the glass sits in its frame, or a sudden temperature change can set it off, sometimes long after the original damage. Breaking into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards is exactly what it was designed to do.

A cracked or fogged window pane is easy to live with in September. It gets a lot harder to ignore in January.

Once glass cracks, it stops working as one solid piece, and cold snaps and temperature swings only add stress. Fog or moisture trapped between the panes usually means the seal has failed, which lets heat slip out even when the glass looks fine.

The days are getting shorter, and you'll notice it first in whichever room already felt dark.

A well placed mirror is the cheapest fix for that. Across from a window it doubles the daylight you already get. On a dim hallway wall or above a mantel it pushes light into a space that has none of its own. Custom sizing means it fits the wall instead of almost fitting it.
