Ever wanted to knit a sock but got intimidated by all the turning and picking up and short-rowing that seems to happen around the heel? Or maybe you've got a newborn on one end of your life and a size XL adult on the other, and you'd like one pattern that covers everybody in between? Either way, I've got you.
The Rye DK Socks (a free pattern from Tincan Knits, available on Ravelry or their website) are worked top-down, sized from newborn all the way up to adult XL. You cast on at the cuff, knit in the round down to the heel, then work the heel flap back and forth in rows. The heel turn is shaped with short rows that decrease and turn the corner, stitches get picked up along the sides of the flap, and you're back in the round for the gusset. From there it's smooth sailing down the foot to the toe, which is shaped by decreases and closed with a graft.
Same setup as the sweater class: $25 for the class, and you bring or buy your own DK weight yarn since the size range is too wide for one flat materials fee to make sense. Buy your yarn from me and get 5% off commercial yarn or 15% off hand-dyed. You'll need DK weight yarn and US #2 (2.75mm) and US #3 (3.25mm) needles, either DPNs or magic loop, whichever you prefer. And like the sweater class, you've got ongoing support from me as you work through it — no clock running out on you.
