Today, we remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Memorial Day is more than a holiday — it’s a time to honor the heroes who gave everything so we could enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted.

As we work with reclaimed wood, we’re reminded that every piece carries a story. Much like the wood we restore and preserve, the legacy of our fallen heroes continues to live on through the memories, traditions, and freedoms they left behind.

Today we pause to reflect, remember, and honor those who never made it home.

Today Assistant Chief Higginbotham gifted this custom retirement shadowbox flag to Chief Mike Lasky as he closes out an incredible career with the Parma Fire Department

From the custom carved flag to the badges, helmet shields, and department details (challenge coins and ISO class patch), every part of this shadowbox was handcrafted to represent the legacy Chief Lasky leaves behind.

Spent some time over at John’s WoodArt Custom Signs shop today watching this custom retirement shadowbox flag come to life. There’s something special about seeing the CNC carve each detail with precision before the final sanding, assembly, and finishing touches begin.

Every cut, pocket, and detail is carefully programmed and carved to create a one-of-a-kind tribute worthy of the years of dedication behind it. Technology helps with the precision, but the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and reclaimed wood story are what truly make these pieces stand out.

This custom white oak shadowbox carries more than just craftsmanship — it carries history. Built from reclaimed white oak salvaged from the former Fairport Harbor Library, originally constructed in 1937, this piece preserves a small part of the community’s story while honoring his dedication and legacy.

Seven years ago, this flag was delivered to the Mentor Fire Department—and looking back, it means more now than I ever could’ve imagined.

This wasn’t just another project. This was the flag… the one that started it all for us.

The one that pushed a small idea in a woodshop into something bigger. The one that opened the door to telling stories through reclaimed wood, honoring service, and creating pieces that carry meaning far beyond the grain.

Seeing it sitting there on the back of the truck, ready to be handed off, was a moment I didn’t fully understand at the time—but it changed everything.

Grateful is an understatement. Grateful for the opportunity, for the trust from Mentor Fire, and for the path it set us on.

Seven years later, we’re still building… still telling stories… and it all goes back to this flag. 🇺🇸🔥
