A fresh set of eyes can change the way you see flowers. 🌸

I usually remove the pollen anthers from every lily that goes into our bouquets. It helps prevent pollen stains and can even help the blooms last a little cleaner.

But Ashley, our newest temporary team member, had a different perspective.

She told me she loves the look of the pollen because it makes the lilies feel more natural, dramatic, and true to the flower.

So this time… I listened.

Instead of saying, “This is how we’ve always done it,” I let her creative vision shine.

Now I’m curious…

🌼 Same flower. Same 7 days. Different outcome.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that all flowers should last the exact same amount of time. The truth is that many factors affect vase life, even when two stems are placed side by side.

Here are a few of the biggest differences you can make at home:

💧 Keep the water clean. Fresh water is one of the easiest ways to extend the life of your flowers. Bacteria multiply quickly in dirty water, clogging the stems and preventing them from drinking properly. Change the water every 2–3 days and rinse the vase before refilling.

✂️ Re-cut the stems. Every few days, trim about ½ inch off the bottom of each stem at an angle. This opens fresh tissue so the flower can absorb water more efficiently.

🌡️ Watch the temperature. Flowers last much longer in cool environments. Warm rooms speed up aging, while placing arrangements near air vents, heaters, or hot appliances can shorten their lifespan.

☀️ Avoid direct sunlight. Bright indirect light is fine, but direct sun heats both the flowers and the vase water, causing blooms to wilt much faster.

🍎 Keep them away from ripening fruit. Fruits like bananas and apples release ethylene gas, which speeds up the aging process of many flowers.

🌸 Every stem is unique. Even flowers from the same bunch can have different vase lives depending on when they were harvested, how they were transported, and their natural genetics.

A little care goes a long way. Fresh flowers are living products, and giving them clean water, a cool spot, and a little attention can add several extra days of beauty to your arrangement. 💐
