Resort or Residential? Maybe Senior Living Needs Both.

For years, senior living has leaned into the resort experience—better dining, wellness spaces, bars, entertainment and amenities that make community life feel a little more special. And we don’t think that’s going anywhere.

But we’re also seeing more interest in spaces that simply feel like home. Comfortable, familiar, a little more intimate and personal.

Maybe the answer isn’t choosing one over the other.

There are spaces where we want the experience. A great restaurant should feel like going out to dinner. A bar should have energy. A wellness space should feel like somewhere you want to spend time.

But as residents move into their neighborhoods and private spaces, the feeling can shift. The scale gets smaller, things get quieter and it starts to feel more like coming home.

For us, it’s less about resort vs. residential and more about knowing where each one makes sense.

We’re curious—what are you seeing more demand for in your communities?

What a wonderful night celebrating design in Arizona! ✨

This weekend, the THD team attended the 2026 ASID Arizona North Chapter Design Excellence Awards Gala, where we had the honor of celebrating so many talented designers—and one of our own!

A huge congratulations to Qingmeng Yao-Lamb, who took First Place in Commercial Healthcare Facility Living for Cogir of Broomfield, a senior living community she led the design of for THD.

From concept through completion, Qingmeng’s vision helped transform the community into a warm, modern environment designed around the people who live there. We’re incredibly proud to see her work and leadership recognized among Arizona’s design community.

Thank you to ASID Arizona North for another spectacular event and for continuing to celebrate the creativity, talent, and impact of our industry. Congratulations to Qingmeng and all of this year’s winners! 🥂

Today is National Senior Citizens Day. And we think it’s a good day to challenge what “senior” is supposed to look like.💫

Growing older doesn’t mean becoming less curious, less social, less adventurous—or less interested in beautiful, inspiring surroundings.

At THD, we design for the realities of aging without allowing age to define the experience. Because the people who call these communities home have spent a lifetime developing their tastes, routines, interests, and sense of style.

They deserve environments that reflect that.

Today, we celebrate older adults—and continue pushing for a future of senior living that feels every bit as vibrant, individual, and evolving as they are.

**Happy National Senior Citizens Day.**🎉

What if supporting cognitive health isn’t only about the programs we offer—but also the environments we create?

Research continues to point to the role movement, nutrition, social connection, and everyday engagement can play in supporting cognitive health. But there’s another piece worth considering: design.

In our newest blog, we explore how the built environment can make healthy behaviors feel more natural—from creating destinations that encourage everyday movement to designing dining experiences people look forward to and intuitive spaces that support independence.

Because design can’t prescribe healthy habits—but it can help create an environment where they’re easier to live every day

There’s more to this room than meets the eye.

In memory care, we intentionally design spaces to feel familiar—like home—because comfort and recognition are just as important as function. The details that make a space feel warm and residential are often the same details working hardest behind the scenes.

A puzzle left within reach can invite spontaneous engagement. Smaller seating groups can encourage connection. Familiar residential elements create a sense of comfort, while thoughtful sightlines help residents and staff maintain clear visual connection throughout the space—supporting ease, awareness, and independent movement.

Even though one room can support many functions, it’s designed so each area still feels distinct and intentional, like its own familiar moment within a larger, cohesive home-like environment.

None of it needs to look like a memory care strategy.

That’s the point.

At THD, we believe some of the most successful design solutions are the ones residents never have to think about—they simply make everyday life feel more intuitive, comfortable, and familiar.

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
This recently completed renovation in Santa Monica, California, gave an existing senior living community a new perspective—from significant construction and architectural updates to the details that bring each space together.

Custom millwork transforms previously underutilized areas into purposeful features. Updated lighting, finishes, flooring, artwork, and furnishings create a more cohesive experience throughout. And a reimagined gathering space feels warmer, more residential, and better suited for how residents live and connect today.

For our client, the renovation repositioned an existing community without losing sight of what was already working. For residents, it created an environment that feels current, comfortable, and distinctly more like home.

Same community. New experience.

Thursday is for finish selections.✨

One of our favorite parts of every project is watching individual materials come together into a cohesive story.

Texture.
Color.
Pattern.
Durability.
Performance.

The goal isn’t just selecting beautiful finishes—it’s selecting the right finishes for the people who will experience these spaces every day.

Which combination is your favorite?

As Catalina ("Cat") wraps up her internship with Thoma-Holec Design, we're taking a moment to thank her for the creativity, dedication, and positive energy she brought to our team. It has been a pleasure having her alongside us, and we’re grateful for all of her contributions throughout the summer.

We wish Cat continued success as she returns to school and takes the next steps toward her career in interior design. We have no doubt she has a bright future ahead.

At THD, internships have always been an important part of who we are. We believe in investing in the future of our profession by mentoring emerging designers, sharing real-world experience, and creating opportunities to learn and grow. It's one of the many ways we give back to the industry that has given so much to us.

Thank you, Cat—we're cheering you on and look forward to seeing where your journey takes you!

𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭.

An art room isn't simply another amenity—it's a place where expression, confidence, and connection come to life. Whether residents are rediscovering a lifelong passion or exploring something new, the environment around them plays an important role in that experience.

Beautiful spaces don't just house activities—they inspire participation. When design supports creativity, it creates opportunities for engagement, self-expression, and meaningful connection every day.
