When looking at one of Ruth Charlotte Kneass’s ruth charlotte kneass mobiles, a few images come to mind. One is the eternal balance between sea and sky—and in fact, Kneass grew up on the coast of Northern California, into a family of boat builders, which surely influences the use of driftwood in so much of her work. Another is the way that assorted shells and wood can serendipitously wash ashore in perfect arrangements, needing only the human eye for appreciation. Images of falling leaves, sticks stuck in spider webs, or the planetary diagrams of the Hermeticists (who saw in the above all nature below) are also evoked.

All of this is to say that Kneass is attuned to the natural world, to the equilibrium of landscape, the poise of geologic formations. In addition to her mobiles, she has completed large marble sculptures, small wooden pieces, home goods, and other art objects.

Custom fiberglass kitchen aboard The World The World of Interiors , a 165-residence floating yacht. Aybar Gallery AYBAR and Vava Objects VAVA fashioned the custom fiberglass kitchen, which features zellige tiles in sea-green shades by Davinci Marble and Clé Tile.

During our recent trip to Morocco, we were able to spend some time at the Anou Cooperative The Anou Cooperative | Shipping worldwide! ✈️ in Fes, an artisan-owned and operated collective of hundreds of weavers in and around the Atlas Mountains. As we mentally traced the zigzagging lines typically found in these carpets, we couldn’t help but connect them to our own community of weavers here in Northern California, and the rich cultural history they represent.

So we were more than happy this month to speak to Trav Meinolf Trav 🌹Meinolf 🍉 , weaver, artist, teacher, founder of the Meinolf Weaving School in San Anselmo Meinolf Weaving School , and great bringer-together of people. For Trav, weaving has always been social, reflecting both the craft’s history as a communal activity and the earliest forms of the loom, which needed at least two people to operate.
