Living room in our Nob Hill Project, featuring an artwork by Petaluma-based artist Ted McCann Ted McCann above a 1990s Vintage EJ142/Waves daybed in black leather designed by Anne-Mette Jensen and Morten Ernst for Erik Jorgensen.

“Consider the living room: “It’s Art Deco meets the 1980s corporate power woman. There’s softness with a strength to it, singling out features like Studio AHEAD’s expansive U-shaped sofa, which helps facilitate conversation amid mesmerizing views of the city”.-AD

The Sheep Furniture Collection.

The Sheep Collection is part of Studio AHEAD’s ever-evolving production arm, dedicated to celebrating Northern Californian culture through custom objects.
The collection was born from the juxtaposition of bold shapes with simple materiality. The pieces are upholstered in undyed felt, handcrafted in Sonoma from merino and local sheep wool sourced from one of the last remaining groups of Northern Californian sheepherders. Inspired by rock formations on Muir Beach and the Russian River that over time have been eroded by flowing water, the shapes have a monolithic feel, but with smoothed and softened edges.

Earlier this year we were invited to the home of David King , the British-born graphic designer and musician who lived in San Francisco for four decades. There we were met by his wife Dione, who guided us through the creative force that is David’s work. David, who died in 2019, produced an enormous body of print ephemera, as well as photography, film, radio plays, and sculpture, that is just now being archived, sorted, and arranged into something resembling a narrative. If there is any connective thread, it might be David’s anarchist spirit, reflecting the times and places he variously called home: Dial House farm, where he met Crass, whose symbol became David’s most well known creation; downtown New York during the no wave scene; and San Francisco.

Dione is lovely and filled with stories, and we were happy to interview her a few months after our meet up to talk about David’s legacy.

Jamie Alexander is one half of Park Life , the exquisitely curated, always interesting retail store and gallery space in Inner Richmond, which he opened in 2006 with Derek Song. Since then, Park Life has become a cultural mainstay, where you might find works from our favorite locals next to rare print ephemera or the latest edition of Apartamento (currently, we’re enjoying Graphic Languages, a global survey of writing systems). Alexander is also co-founder of the exquisitely interesting, always curated SF Art Book Fair , where you might find us strolling this summer. Recently we visited his home in the Richmond District, where we talked books, beginnings, and the time he was sued by Jeff Koons.
