When you see a perfectly integrated, cohesive, beautiful, and functional window treatment…

SATURDAY REFLECTION: WHAT IS THE CURE FOR A “NAKED” WINDOW?”

To the emerging interior designers wrapping up a week of site visits and client meetings:

We talk a lot about the Sigh of Relief — but how do we actually engineer it?

A naked window isn’t just an aesthetic gap.
It’s a sensory disruption that needs a layered solution.
In my 33 years of practice, I’ve learned that we don’t simply “cover” a window — we layer intent.

Here are the three layers that transform a room from exposed to peaceful:

1. THE BASE LAYER — Functional Peace
Solar Screens or Privacy Sheers
• Goal: Remove the “fishbowl” effect
• Outcome: Light filters that protect privacy while keeping the view
This is where Psychological Safety begins.

2. THE SOFTENING LAYER — Emotional Comfort
Ripplefold drapery or Roman shades in natural textures
• Goal: Visual Softening
• Outcome: Fabric absorbs sound, softens edges, and creates that restorative glow

3. THE SMART LAYER — Thermal Sanctuary

IWCE reminded me of my early 90s beginnings — dramatic layers, bold textiles, and expressive compositions.
And now, those styles are resurfacing with a refined, modern edge: deeper colors, layered treatments, valances, swags, and wall‑to‑wall statement fabrics.

𝗔𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲, 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Wellness fabrics are now engineered to actively improve indoor air quality through nanotechnology and Photocatalytic Oxidation (PCO), breaking down VOCs like formaldehyde and toluene. Window treatments are becoming part of a home’s wellness ecosystem, not just decoration.
