Your AC has worked hard all summer. Before Northeast Oklahoma flips from hot afternoons to cool nights, take a few minutes to make sure the heat is ready too.

Turn the thermostat to HEAT, raise the setting a few degrees, and confirm that warm air arrives normally. If the system does not start, makes an unusual noise, or cannot keep up, it is better to find out now than during the first cold snap.

Here's something a lot of folks don't realize about firewood: the wood you cut this fall usually isn't ready to burn this winter.

Freshly cut wood can be close to half water by weight. Burn it and most of your heat goes into boiling that moisture off instead of warming your house - and all that extra smoke turns into creosote inside your chimney.

The number to aim for is under 20% moisture content. How you get there:
- Split it - whole rounds dry painfully slow
- Stack it up off the ground where sun and wind can reach it
- Cover the TOP only - covering the sides traps moisture in
- Give it about 6 months for softwood, a full year for hardwood
