What makes a home feel comfortable has surprisingly little to do with how it looks.

Our sense of comfort is shaped long before we begin choosing furniture or finishes. It comes from the places we've lived, the experiences we've had, and the things we've come to associate with feeling at home.

And because those experiences are personal, even two people who have shared a life together may have very different ideas of what comfort means.

I find this particularly meaningful when designing for someone who is relocating or beginning a new chapter. A new home doesn't have to mean leaving everything familiar behind.

Sometimes, it's the smallest connections to our past that make a new place feel like it belongs to us.

That's why I believe understanding someone's story is just as important as understanding the space we're designing.

I explored this idea in my conversation with Zulmarie Padin | Career | Business | Relationships on Activate Your Power.

When two people disagree about a room, finding a compromise can feel like the obvious next step.

But before looking for a middle ground, I want to understand why each choice matters. A wish for fewer things may be about calm. A piece someone wants to keep may carry a connection to family.

Those differences can lead to a more useful conversation about the life they want to share, and what the space can support.

In this week’s Journal, I explore how design can make room for both people without asking them to want exactly the same things.

Comment “JOURNAL” and I’ll send you the link, or read it through the link in bio.

One of the things I’ve come to believe very strongly is that knowing your “design style” isn’t nearly as important as knowing yourself.

The homes that feel the most personal aren’t usually the ones that follow an aesthetic perfectly. They’re the ones that make room for the things we’ve collected, inherited, discovered, and loved over time.

That’s where design becomes interesting to me—not choosing a label, but finding the thread that makes all of those seemingly different things belong together.

It’s one of the ideas I explored in my recent conversation on Activate Your Power with Zulmarie Padín.

Your Pinterest board is a great place to start a conversation. It’s just not a design plan.

When we meet, I want to know which room you always end up in at night. What you do there. Who is usually with you. Those answers can tell me more about how to design your home than a hundred saved pins.

My Design From Within™ process begins by understanding how you actually live, not by deciding how your home should look. It’s one of the reasons no two of my projects look alike.

If you’re thinking about a project, book a discovery call through the link in my bio. We’ll start with you.

I believe a home should be designed around the life inside it.

My Discovery Session happens before any floor plan or finish. Every question is about how you actually live: how your days go, and which rooms you find yourself in without deciding to.

People often go quiet before answering. It happens often enough that I have stopped being surprised when someone tells me something about their own home they had never said out loud.

Those answers become the three layers I design from: Identity, Narrative, Intentionality.

đź“– Narrative is the layer I pay the most attention to. A home has to evolve with you and still work when your life changes.

My Discovery Session exists for exactly that conversation. Send me a message if you would like to have it.

“That’s me.” Those are the two words I work toward in every project. The moment a client walks through their finished home, looks around, and recognizes themselves in it.

Not “that’s beautiful.”
Not “that’s impressive.”
Those are compliments about a space. “That’s me” is recognition, and it only happens when a home was built around the person living in it rather than around a look.

There’s a conversation coming with Zulmarie Padín on the Activate Your Power podcast where I explain how I get there. More on that soon.

My career has taken me through two very different industries, but the work has always begun in the same place: understanding people.

Before I make a design decision, I want to understand what home means to you. How do you live? What do you want to preserve? What has changed? And what does your home need to support next?

Those answers become the foundation for a home that isn’t defined by a passing trend or a designer’s signature. It is shaped by your identity, your experiences, and the life you’re living now.

That is Design From Within™.

This next chapter is about sharing more of that process—the questions I ask, the thinking behind the decisions, and how we translate those insights into the spaces we create at Brickell Interiors.

I’ll be talking about all of it soon on Activate Your Power with Zulmarie Padín.

When someone shows me a Pinterest image, I'm not really looking at the room.

I'm looking at what made them stop on that one. Maybe it's the light. How open it feels. How quiet. How easy it looks to live in.

The image is a clue. It isn't the answer.

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what you want. You bring the instinct. I ask the questions that help uncover what’s behind it.

If you'd like to begin that reflection on your own, my Reflection Guide is a good place to start. Comment DESIGN and I'll send it over.

Money can buy a beautiful home. It can’t buy a home that feels like you.

You can choose the best of everything and still walk into a room that belongs to no one in particular.

That happens when design begins with how a home should look. I begin somewhere else: with understanding the person who will live in it.

That order changes the direction of the entire project, so the home reflects who you are and supports the life you’re living now.

If you’d like to begin that reflection on your own, my Reflection Guide is a good place to start. Comment DESIGN and I’ll send it over.

Every decision in your home has a purpose. Most of the time, nobody has said it out loud.

That’s why renovations can feel overwhelming. Paint, lighting, layouts, materials. Hundreds of choices, without a clear way to judge one against another. So we default to what looks good, what feels safe, or what everyone else is doing.

But the homes that feel most authentic aren’t the most expensive ones. They’re the ones where every decision points in the same direction.

That direction begins with understanding how you want to live - and using that understanding to guide every choice that follows.

I wrote about this in my Journal, and how to define that direction before you change a thing.

Comment JOURNAL and I’ll send you the link.
