I have seen the goodness of God.

I’ve been thinking about those words a lot lately. They’re easy words to sing. Easy words to put on a wall or wear around your neck. But the older I get, the more weight they seem to carry.

As I turn 44 years old this week, I’m recognizing that these words mean something different to me than they might have 10 or 20 years ago. From my view at 44, the goodness of God isn’t found only when I”m on the mountaintop: when business is good, when my kids are healthy, my marriage feels strong, or my bank account has a cushion.

God’s goodness- I’m recognizing- is something so much richer and so much less conditional.
Now, I see that His goodness exists even when my prayers weren’t answered the way I wanted them to be. Through miscarriages and other loss, through times where we seemed to be just scraping by, through cancer and traumatic injuries of loved ones, and through hard parenting seasons… that’s when I see his goodness the most. It’s in those times that I can look back and recognize how He was the one sustaining and providing all along.

Simply put, God’s goodness hasn’t always looked like prayers answered exactly as I hoped. Sometimes I’ve seen it in abundance and celebration. But more often than not, I’ve seen it in provision for one day at a time, unexpected strength, people showing up, a door closing, peace that didn’t make sense, forgiveness, another morning, or simply realizing that God was still there.

The goodness of God isn’t only found in the things I would label “good.” Sometimes His goodness is simply His faithfulness to meet us there. And those are the moments, from my view at 44, that I’m so thankful to be able to see with even more clarity now than ever before.

God is good.

He has been faithful before. He is faithful today. And He will continue to be faithful in every season still to come.

Yes, we love to make things beautiful, and create spaces that look pretty. But friend, let’s also acknowledge that it’s often the unspoken parts of what you are doing in your home that have the biggest impact.

It’s the atmosphere you are creating that will be what they remember most. The comfort, emotional safety, warmth, hospitality, rhythms, peace, and faith that you work so hard to impart into your home... those are things they will take with them out into the world and that will shape who they are becoming, and there is no amount of decor that can ever be more valuable than that.

Keep going, sister. The little things are making the biggest difference. 🤍

You are not behind on creating a beautiful home, friend. Instagram and Pinterest may have you believing otherwise, but remember this:

1. It’s OK for your home to evolve slowly, one wall or one corner at a time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your home be.

2. The type of beauty you want- the kind that feels collected, meaningful, and intentional- that takes time. You are not seeking a space that looks like a big box store threw up in it (no offense big box stores). You are seeking a space that feels collected- like each piece was hand chosen with a story or intention. This does not happen overnight.

3. Comparison is the thief of joy. Set your mind on focusing on YOUR home, and how you can make it the best it can be within the means that you have. Besides, you don’t want a carbon copy of someone else’s space... you will find so much more joy in creating spaces that are uniquely yours!

4. Intentionality matters more than budget. There is SO much that you can do to create a beautiful space, even with little to spend. Paint, thrifted accessories, and one meaningful piece of artwork can make ALL the difference!

Home is a sacred space, and it’s worth our efforts to make it a place for our family to breathe easy in. But, it’s also OK to take our time, corner by corner, to make it our own little haven we love... and the finished product will be so much more satisfying in the end. You’ve got this, friend.
