Happy Brightwork Wednesday! I want to divert away from posting about Designing for Dementia this week to bring you a public service announcement.

I spent a couple days with my Mom last week as she was recovering from surgery, and I noticed how much she used the grab bars around her home. It led to a discussion about what she does at my house (with no grab bars,) and I realized that I need to have something in place for her when she visits over the holidays.

Because I want something that was multi-purpose and not permanent, I chose to purchase a Wonder Stander Pole. This is by no means the only brand that makes tension poles, but they have a solid reputation and multiple options.

If you have older family members (especially ones who use grab bars) visiting your home this holiday season, I encourage you to consider something like this to help them stay safe, particularly in the bathroom. And, PLEASE do NOT purchase suction cup grab bars. They are not ADA compliant!

If you have any questions about accessibility products, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Happy Brightwork Wednesday. As part of our Designing for Dementia series, this week we’ll be discussing furnishings and home accessories that can instill anxiety and/or fear in people living with dementia.

- Area rugs with a light colored border and a dark center may look like a hole to a person living with dementia and they may refuse to walk across the rug for fear of falling in. # #

- Furnishings and home accessories with speckles or wavy lines may appear to be covered by bugs or snakes. People living with dementia may try to pick off the bugs (speckles) or become afraid of the snakes (wavy lines.)

Better options would be low contrast patterns and non-speckled finishes.

Happy Brightwork Wednesday! Returning to our “Designing for Dementia” Series, I’d like to talk about how the use of color and light can help those living with Dementia.

1. Color contrast is extremely important because the eyes of someone living with Dementia progressively decline. By choosing contrasting colors for floors, walls, door frames, and furniture, their edges are more clearly defined and it is easier for the individual to move safely within the space.

2. Favorite or unique colors can help with way-finding. A brightly colored front door that’s different than the neighbors’ makes it easier to identify home.

3-4. The eyes of those living with Dementia require twice as much light as those without. Diffused natural night is best during the day and layered light (wall sconces, lamps, and gentle overhead) is best at night to reduce glare and prevent harsh shadows.

If someone you love is living with Dementia, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d be happy to share some additional tips with you.

Happy Brightwork Wednesday! Today will be the fourth and final installment of the “Rules of Mixing Metals”. The Fourth Rule is that you should keep your major categories consistent and mixing things up with accessories. You’ll want to:
- Keep all plumbing the same finish
- Keep all hardware in the same finish
- Lighting and accessories (think mirrors, towel bars, etc) can be a mix of the other finishes or a new one all together. Just be sure to follow Rules 1-3!
