Process so much defines an artwork, or artist, and can represent its entire value. Everything made in my studio is done by hand, and that definition is considered very intentionally. Drawing from life, carving molds by hand with wooden tools, pressing tiles with my own strength, and brushing glaze on to tiles with concentated effort and over-consumption of coffee defines the work I make. There are NO cnc routers, printers, scanners, AI nonsene whatsoever. All this technology compromises the Arts & Crafts lifestyle. All I need to fuel my work is a good meal and night of rest, and the regular company of good friends. If Im down, a walk listening to the neighborhood birds can reinspire me. Meanwhile, all those programs that use downloaded programs connected to the cloud are fueled by data centers, the enemy of the wildlife and nature. I know Instagram is a part of this too. But the quality of handmade tiles is in HOW they are made, the craftsman, and their artistic touch. It takes way more energy to use 3D printers and routers to make a mold than what my own hands can do. You cannot call work handcrafted if these tools are being used. Thank you to everyone who attended my art show this season and admired this quality in the tiles. We need to stand up for a healthy, quality lifestyle rooted in nature, growing things, and helping each other grow. We can do so much more with ourselves, our hands, and seeing our own communities. And limiting our data usage and apps on our devices. We need to stop the proliferation of data centers.

Thank you everyone for showing up to the Tosa Tour of Homes today. I enjoyed meeting so many people and learning more about the fascinating history of the school. Of course I was so stoked to give credit to the tiler makers who created the tiles nearly 100 years ago and have my own handmade tiles on display in this historic, elegant lobby. Thank you to the Wauwatosa Historical Society for hosting this event, and pictured with me is Carol. Big hugs to everyone!!

Please join me for a special presentation in the Firefly Room at the Wauwatosa Public Library on Oct. 9. Themes will explore architectural terra cotta and faience tile in Wauwautosa, as well as the purpose of Arts & Crafts in the 21st century. Handmade materials used to shape our built-environment entirely and seem to be a luxury now. New-builds do not have the character that old buildings do, and flippers are doing away with priceless tiled fountains, fireplaces, floors, and bathrooms. This does not have to be the case. But to appreciate this historic craftsmanship is becoming a lost art, made superficial by digital technologies, and disconnected from a lifestyle that is vanishing with our screens. I hope you can come and enjoy my growing perspective on why the Arts & Crafts is essential today, and see photographs of impressive tiles in Tosa homes and schools. If you missed my lecture at the Lighthouse Museum, this one is similar but not about MKE. See you there! Hosted by the Wauwatosa Historical Society.

Gave a reading of my latest book to Isadore Skibba's sculptures at the South Milwaukee Historical Society today. The figures were a little busy doing poses but were flattered to see themselves in the book, ha! Had a great time reading with Sue as well! Sue and Judy from the historical society were tremendously helpful with reviewing the book and owe them a huge thank you. Figure artists and ceramists: visit the SMHS! This Saturday July 19 is open house from 10am-3pm, and you can see the artworks with your own eyes. Skibba was a Milwaukee artist with his artistic touch in many of the tiles that decorate the city, esp. the animal corbels at Lake Bluff School in Shorewood. In 2018 the artist's daughter generously donated his oeuvre to the society. At this time Skibba's story was mostly tucked away in boxes, but with my experience as a figurative ceramist for many years in Milwaukee, I wanted to present this story. It would have made a difference to me as a UWM art student to have been aware of these figures then, given insight and guidance on the type of work I was doing. This is our local art history, and when we are looking for our own artistic voice, it helps to see how others have figured that out or, at least, tried to in some way. So I encourage everyone to make a visit - the collections at the SMHS are special, intriguing, and well-curated. And these sculptures photographed here are nearly 100 years old! Make a visit! And also want to shout out to Kelly Dudley & Kathy Roberts for their help on the Carl Bergmans book, who hired Skibba in the 1920s, and Steve and Lois Schreiter who allowed me to photograph the sculptures in the book.

Finished a tile mural inspired by the Bloodroot flower that blooms in April. It's petals can disappear within a day but this mural will remember their beauty as long as it is up. Thanks to my new assistant Taylor for helping me install. Stop by and see it in person this Saturday at open studio (10-12pm).

About a month ago I had the pleasure of meeting Christine Martens and the Friends of Historic Wausau Landmarks crew. I gave a two-for-one presentation on terra cotta landmarks in Wausau as well as my life story in art. Wausau truly is the capital of arts and culture in northern Wisconsin and was formative to my experience in art as a kid. And there are many connections between Wausau and Milwaukee architecture that I elaborate on in the presentation. If you are interested in listening while you do a puzzle or something, you can go to YouTube, image 2 shows title. It was truly a splendid audience and I’m so grateful to have been given the chance to present. Sending hugs!!

Made it to the end of the school year and pretty much was able to complete “Alphabets of the World” created by hand and on-site at my school, Garland. Still some cleaning up to do but nothing that can’t wait a couple months. About 600 pairs of hands helped create and install this mural, all the kids and staff, totaling about 3600 tiles. We started after Thanksgiving, and now kids walking by can stop and hang out on the mural, casually encounter letters in Arabic, Karen, Sanskrit, Tifinagh, Latin, you name it. My school will do a ribbon cutting in the fall so I’ll be sure to send out the details when we get there. For now I’m starting summer and taking some time to relax. Oh and one more detail- the center tile with MPS has the word “Abota” carved in Arabic letters which is the Hausa word for friendship, designed by a student from my school from Nigeria. So I guess this is a cheers to MPS and it’s many families learning together, united by our diversity and proud of what we accomplish together.

Excited for a new book coming soon, featuring the artist, Isadore Skibba, who was the man “behind the scenes” at the Continental Faience & Tile Co., in South Milwaukee. A collection of sculptures that didn’t make it in the last Bergmans book are getting their own well-deserved feature here. If you have already pre-ordered a copy, they’ll be shipping by July. Pictured here are the preview copies. Thank you for your patience!!! Copies are available on my website.

Many people ask me if this tile is a squid, and I call them silly goose’s. It’s inspired by the shooting star flower, one of my favorite ephemeral flowers (they’re all my favorite). Now that a few are popping up in the garden, maybe I’ll get to a larger tile of them?! Thanks husband for planting these beauties!

Had the pleasure of speaking with Friends of Historic Wausau Landmarks last week. In putting together the presentation it really became apparent all the connections between Wausau and Milwaukee in terms of its built-environment, and of course with terra cotta from Chicago, specifically the Northwestern Terra Cotta Co. The crew holding together the organization were also so friendly and like-minded; if only Wausau and Milwaukee were even closer! Big hugs to you all. Until next time!!
