A Honey Bear is as ferocious as it sounds
It is always interesting explaining how I came up with the name Honey Bear Interiors, since there was no crazy method to my madness. Most designers want to be remembered easily, so they use their own names for their company but I was always told that my name, specifically Sam Steed, sounds like a great name for a private investigator. “Sam Steed, is on the case!” If I was going for a Mary-Kate and Ashley vibe, I would have been totally set. However, I wanted something a little more unique.
Whenever you come up with a name for a business, you want it to be catchy, clever and simple. It can be a lot of pressure since you are stuck with it til the end of time. So I decided to make a list of about 50 words including design elements, some of my favorite words and some words from my hometown. I tried at least 10 different combinations and none of them seemed to fit my idea of my company. I was focusing so hard on this tiny detail for days that I started giving up and getting frustrated. I needed to put it down and walk away.
I went home to relax and unwind from mental battle I was having in my head. My boyfriend called and I vented my frustration out on him. He reassured me that I would eventually figure it all out and all would be well in the world again. I was still in a dumpy mood so he started calling me the nickname that he uses when I’m grumpy: Bear. It’s pretty fitting when you think about it; there is that old saying “don’t poke the bear”. He wanted to be sweet and cheer me up so he was doing his usual crazy cute thing that he does, and he started to call me Honeybear, along with a bunch of other variations. I’ve heard him call me this before, but never before did it click something inside me.
I mulled over the idea of naming a company something so different and so obscure, but eventually I felt that it was the right choice. It is a name for myself, but also is a brand that I can build upon. Thus, I welcome you to Honey Bear Interiors.
