Before you buy a single tube of caulk, find out where the cold is actually coming from.

Run your hand along the glass, then the frame, then the sash. Moving air means a leak you can seal. But a pane that's cold in the middle and not at the edges is something else — the seal inside the glass has failed, and no amount of caulk or film will fix that one.

Want to know if your windows already have low-e glass? Hold a lighter up to the pane after dark.

A double pane throws back four reflections. If one of them comes back a different color, that pane is coated. Ten seconds, no technician, and it tells you more than most quotes do.

A window replacement job in Oak Creek turned into a few hours of good conversation — and Jim wrote about both.

Vadym, Roman and the third man on the crew handled a full vinyl window replacement at his place. Jim says he isn't sure which he liked more: the finished windows or the stories they traded while the work went on.

That's one of our lead specialists on a call we get constantly. A sticking sash usually means a worn roller, a bent track, or a balance that's given out - and forcing it is how people end up cracking the glass.
