Design is in the details. And sometimes that means moving the same tile around more times than anyone wants to admit. 😉

This bathroom renovation is a good example of what happens between the selections and the finished room. How materials transition, where patterns begin and end, how proportions feel in the actual space—and the on-site decisions that make the original design come together in real life.

It’s part planning, part problem-solving, and occasionally, specifically random.

Specifically random.

I apparently have a name for it now. 😂

I don’t want a room to look like everything arrived together, perfectly matched and already knowing where it belonged.

I create something a little unexpected. An odd object. A family heirloom whose value is in the story behind it. A change in scale. A shape that doesn’t quite follow the rules.

Of course, making something feel collected rather than coordinated involves a lot of very specific decisions.

The goal is for you not to see all that work. You just feel, the moment you enter the room, that it belongs together.

What makes an old color palette feel new again?

I recently had a fun conversation with Better Homes & Gardens about the return of some very familiar color combinations—and why nostalgia may be part of what’s bringing them back.

One of the things I shared: “The colors are trending, but the ways they’re used are not.”

To me, it’s that distinction that makes revisiting color interesting. We may recognize the palette, but how we layer it, balance it and live with it today can feel entirely different.

Thank you to Better Homes & Gardens and Kristina for including my perspective in the conversation.
