What’s your favorite Minnesota lake?

I’m nearly done with this loon posse, and I’m giving them lake names! Suggestions needed.

See one you want, need, must have? Message me! They are all 5”x7” acrylic and a little chalk pastel on paper. Paint drying, names pending.

Now on my website!

Original art should be matted- so that the paint doesn’t stick to the glass. A mat gives the painting space to breathe. And it’s purrty.

I offer a simple white mat for all of my 9”x12” paintings. But you can order the painting alone and have it matted to any size or color you like. You can also grab a frame from places like Target, and some of those have a mat built in.

Either way, I package carefully and ship to you within two business days.

Bright, colorful, one of a kind art- on your wall this week.☀️

I can be a little fickle when it comes to what I paint. How am I going to keep painting irises when peonies are blooming? Lately palm trees occupy my brain, abstracts keep popping in, and sea otters are also swimming around on my palette.

And then there are the loons. At this point I’ve painted a dozen or so, and I know I could paint 50 (100?) more. There’s a nice repetitiveness to the bird itself. But then every background is a choose your own adventure situation. Water can be pink. Skies are sometimes green. Tree lines can be blurry or pointy little evergreens. Minnesota scenery is varied and gorgeous, and I get to paint it!

My family spent our spring break in Miami. By the time we left, my daughter could engage in a conversation on art deco, and my son could identify a Lamborghini. So Miami.🩷🧡💛

Have you been? It IS these colors! Pinks and oranges, turquoise and teal. I love a subject that engages alllllll the colors. And a Miami scene gets me there.

I can recall the first time I met a palm tree. Prior to our encounter I sort of thought they weren’t real, rather something exotic existing only in movies. I was 15, a Minnesota kid, visiting LA, and I felt like I was on another planet. I also remember interstates the size of Mercury, 7-elevens, and backyard pools about as common as kitchens.

Sarah Downing Hutmacher, this one’s for you.

A week ago I asked you to throw a couple colors my way, and I’d paint with just them (plus black and white). Sarah suggested bright orange and turquoise. Voila! I like it. I used paynes gray (a dark navy blue) for my dark, in place of black.

I think I want to throw a little yellow or chartreuse on there…

Fluorescent Red and Hooker’s Green had a playdate and made some weird art.

It is amazing to me how many colors you can create with just two tubes of paint (plus black and white). Makes me want to try all the combinations and paint all the things.

Gimme your two favorite colors and maybe I’ll try them next!

“65 and Counting”
9”x12” acrylic and chalk pastel on paper

The mat takes this painting up to 12”x16”. That’s a size you can easily find a frame for. However, if you like a different size or color of mat, order just the painting, and have it matted to your liking. I happen to like the white on this one, but it’s all personal preference.

Why 65? The common loon was named Minnesota’s state bird in 1961. And I counted on my fingers four times to make sure- that was 65 years ago. 65 years of representing our state, which she did in a big way this past winter. Proudly and majestically.
