Resist Transmogrification Laboratory Turning discarded everyday objects into hideously beautiful creations. Reduce

Repulse The vast majority get turned into lamps.

I have a penchant for (some might say an 'obsession' with) finding and collecting things that most people would consider trash. Motorcycle and bike parts, old metal and wooden boxes, gears, gauges, broken machinery. I HATE to see things go to waste, so when I see something with some potential to it, I usually take it home. These days I’m working in an attic “laboratory” with bits and pieces lining

every wall from floor to ceiling. I tend towards a machine age or “mad scientist” aesthetic with a lot of them. I just call it all “junk punk.” I get bored doing just one thing all the time, so some of my finds get turned into other household furnishings: little shelves, coat racks, curiosity cabinets, and the like. I like to think of my creations as hideously beautiful in the same way that a classic car that has weathered in a field is still pleasing to look at.

Big things are coming , but for now it's the small things that are making this feel like MY shop. Taking the time to spruce up a dumpstered fan or put my ugly speaker into a new enclosure. That pan is about to get a new handle from an old bicycle. Everything is finding it's place.

A couple new lamps I've built for the pop-up happening this Thursday at Sheraton. Again, these are ideas I've been playing around with for years and finally taking the time to build them the way that I've been envisioning them. Really trying to focus on creating the things that I really want to create, rather than trying to build things that I can sell. They're bigger. They're more elaborate. They more time consuming. And they are so much more fun!

The first one is a metal version of one of my favorite lamps that I bought at Savers as a teenager.

The 2nd I started building for a friend who passed away, and then it took on a life of its own. It has a whole post-apocalyptic back story which turned into 5 pages when I sat down to write it. (And will probably continue from there.)

The 3rd one I finished for the Luminaries show at .and.that.2731 and it was kind of the start of me working on the kind of lamps that I really love.

Covid set me over a week behind on everything, so now that I'm feeling better (and not contagious) I've been buckling down and trying to get all these new lamps done for my pop-up gallery next week.

Again, I'm heading back to old ideas that I kept putting on the back burner to make "marketable" lamps. These are lamps with stories. Some true. Some fiction. These are things I should have finished ages ago, but I'm excited to finally be following through. And so grateful to be able to spend time in the shop! Being stuck at home was crazymaking!

The last couple photos are some other things I've been working on. Just need to grab some yellow paint for the salt girl. (I only had pink on hand)

Progress has been slow, but it's still progress. I end up doing a lot of this alone at 5 o'clock in the morning. Up and down. Up and down, with wood and tools and hardware. So far though, everything except nuts and bolts and screws has been salvaged.

This morning, I framed up this wall. I didn't have enough 3/8" plywood do to the whole thing, but I had an old window! Not planning to live up there. (unless the economy keeps going the way it is, LOL) I just don't want to tumble off of there onto the brick floor in the bay. Getting that window mounted by myself was a bit tricky, but I managed not to drop it.

I just need to get some scrap metal racks built and then I can start loading this thing up.

I have an art opening at Acadia tomorrow (Friday) from 5-7pm. I've been working on a new piece just for this show and I'm really excited about it. I had to push through some pretty serious depression to get it done so it feels like a real accomplishment. I'm only going to post this teaser photo because I'd really like it if you showed up and saw it in person. I'll also be putting up a couple of my other favorite pieces and maybe a couple little assemblage pieces that I'm usually too shy to share.

It's also the last day of Luminaries. If you haven't been over to see that... it's your last chance to see the absolutely amazing show that Nat & Jonia put together. I have a couple pieces in the show that have been "in progress" for about a decade. (And I'm really excited about them too!)

Thanks to .and.that.2731 & for giving me the opportunity (and impetus) to display some pieces that I really love.

I'm very excited to have this lamp on display at .and.that.2731 Luminaries show. I started this lamp 5-10 years ago after finding an absolutely amazing haul in a dumpster. I started adding a lot of my favorite finds, but it's the biggest lamp I've ever built (it's taller than me) and for one reason or another it stalled. Maybe it felt daunting, or the winter doldrums hit. Who knows?

What I do know is that this show provided the impetus to finish it! And I'm really happy with it!

It's hard to get a good picture of it because there's not a spot in the house without arts and treasures. So come see it and turn the switches for yourself.

Headlight Lamp - $80

This is made to be hung on the wall, but it also sits nicely on a table. The back plate is the brake cover from one of my old (Honda?) motorcycles. The cord is 12 feet long so it'll easily reach an outlet. It turns off/on with a vintage bakelite k**b on top of the headlight shell.
