Ok so I extended National Jelly Roll Day to a whole weekend…needed that extra day today to finish up! My squares came out so pretty. I am still in awe of this. I didn’t have a pattern, but was going off a picture I saw online. So it doesn’t have a name, but this quilt top is done. It’s about 68”x84”, so probably perfect for a full size bed or it will make an awesome lap blanket for the back of the couch. I am thinking it might be a little short for a queen, but I’ll check on Gina’s bed after I get it quilted. Hopefully this week. I hope there’s a National Layer Cake or Charm Pack Day coming up soon, this was so much fun & I have lots of those in my stash already.

If you don’t see more pictures of this finished up soon, feel free to nudge me. I kept forgetting my last quilt top, it’s still waiting to be quilted, too!

I’m not sure if this is a made up day, but I read in a few emails this morning that today is National Jelly Roll Day. Or maybe National Sew a Jelly Roll Day. (Yes they were emails from shops that sell jelly rolls, so I’m aware of their genius marketing in play!) In any case, I decided to do just that. So here’s some of my pics in process. The tag on this one says Carnaby Street by Maywood Studio. Just one block done so far. Stay tuned…

Clayton is 5. Sometimes he likes to bother his big sisters. They were begging me to intervene, so I invited Clayton to help me play with some thread and my embroidery machine. He picked which pattern to start with and the thread colors. He did lose interest during the 38 minutes it took to stitch the bird, but when it was time for the “magic trick” with the water soluble stabilizer, he was excited. He ended up taking the owl to his kindergarten teacher because he’s in the owl class at school. 🥰

Here’s a quick TikTok with the few pictures I took while putting together this gorgeous quilt. The quilt top is another one that I got from Alice, the sweet older lady on Facebook marketplace. I have not yet figured out how to take video of myself sewing to make a better video. Putting too much thought into that is taking away from my quilting time though, so this is what I’ve got! When Gina or Liam come home from college, maybe they can help me out!

Anyway….back to the quilt! It’s amazing. I can’t figure out even when I looked at the back how she did the piecing. The diamonds are all perfect. This is definitely a way more advanced pattern than I have tried yet, I’m still working on squares and triangles. I’m really proud of my long arm quilting on this one though. It’s another one of my favorite pantograph patterns (seems they all become a favorite once I use them!) but I did a really good job on the spacing and also filling in the gaps on the top and bottom rows. I’ve basically been self-taught on the long arm machine (with a lot of help from YouTube and my occasional shout/text for help from my favorite instructor at The Fabric Center) so this is the kind of thing that excites me. The backing is a gorgeous blue color that I thought complemented the bright blue on the tips of the star points. The thread I chose is another variegated blend. They look so neat in person.

The first picture is the quilt top spread out on my king-size bed. But it hangs perfectly on a queen size bed. Looked pretty good in Gina’s room too, but I don’t think she can afford it. 🤣 I’m asking $250, and that includes shipping if you are not local. Message me if you’re interested!

Here's what's been under construction in Mimi Land the past couple weeks...

The kids went back to school (Halleluiah!) I caught up on a Block of the Month project I've been working on. I quilted 2 more of Alice's quilt tops. One went to my parents for an anniversary gift, the other can be yours if you like it. I finished piecing the last 2 t-shirt quilts for my special order. Quilted and bound the first 2. I used a new technique for one of the bindings which was really pretty exciting for me, but might not be very noticeable to the average (non-obsessive quilter) person. I took a day to quilt something just for me - a cute little wall hanging that I put above my cutting table. The transition from computer room to sewing haven is well underway. Oh, and I got some new lighting for my upstairs sewing room (aka my bedroom) where the long arm is. Yes, my "little hobby" has now taken over 2 levels of the house and I'M LOVING IT!

Coming up soon...the big reveal with my special order t-shirt quilts should happen this week. I imagine I will finish them up tomorrow. I'll also be starting another custom order quilt for an old/dear college friend, as well as some surgical scrub caps for another friend. I purchased backing for the twister quilt top, so I hope to get that quilted this week, too.

Hopefully, when the kids start school next week, I'll have more time to update this page more often. In the meantime...here are some photos of what I've been sewing the last couple weeks. Oh, and a picture of a metal chicken just for good measure.

Coming up on the to-do list: masks, an apron or two, t-shirt quilts, masks for the kids, a puff quilt, catching up on block of the month, more masks, finishing up Liam's quilt from Shipshewana, and perhaps quilting more of Alice's quilt tops that I have been hoarding for myself! And did I mention masks? 😷
