There’s just something special about a plate of good old-fashioned Southern comfort food! ❤️

This week in Mama Whitten’s Kitchen, my teen cooking students learned how to make crispy country-fried chicken, fluffy homemade buttermilk biscuits, and creamy sawmill gravy from scratch! 😋

These are the kinds of practical kitchen skills I want my students to carry with them long after they leave my cooking school. Because it’s about more than just following a recipe — it’s about building confidence, learning techniques they’ll actually use, and being able to proudly put a delicious, homemade meal on the table for their families. 🏡🍽️

Around here, we’re keeping Southern cooking traditions alive, one young chef at a time!

✨ Want your teen to build real kitchen confidence? Come join me in Mama Whitten’s Kitchen! I’d love to welcome your family to my online cooking classes. Comment “Cook” to get the link register your teenager today!

Food just has a way of bringing up sweet memories and today’s class was full of them!🤍

I taught my Papa’s country fried chicken, buttermilk biscuits (my MeMa taught me those when I was 10🥹) and sawmill gravy. This class was truly an education in in the ways of down home southern cooking!

Did you know it was that easy to meal prep sweet potatoes?

Here’s how:
Preheat oven to 400, bake sweet potatoes about 35-40 minutes until until a knife easily pokes through the flesh. Allow to cool 20 minutes and the peeling will pull right away. Use for tons of recipes like soup, sweet potato soufflé, or an easy mashed sweet potato side dish with a little butter, salt, garlic and chili powder (savory), or maple syrup, butter and cinnamon (sweet).

Potato Soup:
You’ll need:
2 pieces of bacon
4 medium russet potatoes
1 medium onion
2 stalks celery
2 tbsp garlic powder
3 tbsp butter
4 cups chicken stock
1.5 cups half and half
1/4 cup sour cream
1/2 cup sharp cheddar (plus more for serving)
S&P

Cut bacon into small pieces and add to a soup pot. Brown over medium heat and remove from the pot. Add butter, diced onion, celery, garlic, and sauté until veggies are tender. Add potatoes and season with 1 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp pepper. Add in stock and simmer until potatoes are tender. Turn heat to low, use a fork or potato masher to break up some of the potatoes and add thickness to the soup. Add in half and half, sour cream, (immediately whisking well to incorporate) and cheese. Garnish with reserved bacon, extra cheese, sour cream and chopped celery leaves or scallions.

(For crockpot, cook with all ingredients on low 4-6 hours, adding dairy the last 20-30 minutes)

Do you peel you potatoes like a southern MeMa?

This week’s live class was all about potatoes and I taught my students how to make a classic and comforting potato soup! 🥔

Each of my live classes for teenagers has a foundational cooking lesson focus that I teach them, then use in showing them how to prep a particular meal.

In my experience, knowing the “why”behind the recipe gives them the confidence in the kitchen to pull off a great meal even if they don’t have a written recipe in front of them. 🙌🏼
