Oyster shuckers in South Carolina, 1912 — Josie (6), Bertha (6), and Sophie (10), beginning their workday at 4 a.m. in the Maggioni Canning Company.
This photograph, taken in 1912 by Lewis Hine, shows three young girls working along the South Carolina coast. Oyster canneries relied heavily on child labor, particularly during the winter harvest. Children frequently started their shifts before dawn—around 3 or 4 a.m.—so the oysters could be processed while still fresh.
Josie, Bertha, and Sophie represented thousands of children employed in the seafood industry. Shucking oysters was exhausting and hazardous: razor-sharp shells, crude knives, and constant exposure to cold brine led to frequent injuries and infections. The children toiled for long hours in unheated buildings, paid only a few cents per bucket. Many impoverished families required every child’s earnings to survive, especially in coastal areas with limited dependable work.
Hine, working for the National Child Labor Committee, often disguised himself as an insurance agent to enter workplaces unnoticed. His photography revealed the grim reality of child labor in America. These images stirred public anger and played a central role in advancing stronger federal protections for children.
By 1910, about two million children worked in American factories, mines, mills, and canneries—some as young as five. Hine’s work was key to the eventual passing of federal child labor laws.
