The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia, has earned a reputation as one of the state's most famous paranormal destinations.

Among the spirits said to haunt its halls is Lily, believed in the folklore to be the spirit of a young girl. Her true identity and the story of how she came to be associated with the asylum remain a mystery.

Visitors and paranormal investigators have reported unusual activity associated with Lily — and over the years, a tradition has developed among those hoping to make contact with her.

Did you know the witnesses in Point Pleasant didn't originally call it Mothman?

In the first reports from November 1966, witnesses described a strange “man-sized bird,” “large flying man,” or enormous birdlike creature with glowing red eyes.

The name Mothman came afterward as newspapers and the public tried to put a name to whatever people claimed they were seeing.

And there's a wonderfully 1960s reason the name probably sounded familiar:
Batman was one of the biggest shows on television. 🦇
“Mothman” fit right into the superhero-style naming of the era.

More than half a century later, the nickname stuck.
And now an entire town has embraced it. 😂
