Our Boulevard/Wellsbach lamp lighting up the streets of Charlestown

Located just north of the Charles River, Charlestown is Boston’s oldest neighbourhood. Originally known as Mishawaum, Charlestown proper was founded in 1628 and included what is now Woburn, Malden, Stoneham, and South Medford.

On June 17, 1775, Charlestown was the site of one of the most important battles of the Revolutionary War. This is all immediately apparent from the neighbourhood’s abundance of landmarks and plaques, and that much-loved brick strip in the ground known as the Freedom Trail. Charlestown today is known for its red-brick townhouses, views of the water and heritage gas-lit streets. Charming parks and squares dot the narrow streets, which are home to stylish shops, boutiques, and restaurants serving up top-tier local cuisine.

This iconic Beacon Hill lantern is an integral part of the well-known Beacon Hill history, casting a warm glow on the brick row houses, and offering a glimpse of how the city’s streets glowed in days past.

Gas lights in Boston were first installed in 1828, and electric lamps started to appear in 1882. By 1913 most lanterns were electric except for some residential districts. In the 1960s, with Boston undergoing urban renewal, the number of city-owned street lights increased and lanterns in historic neighbourhoods were converted back to being gas-lit.

The Beacon Hill lantern remains in Boston’s city streets today, finely crafted from solid copper.
