I am always asked what I consider my favorite period of design. My answer is that I appreciate fine design throughout the centuries. However, I truly love jewelry that functions in everyday life. This necklace is an example of function, history and beauty.
The necklace pictured is from the Wiener Werkstatte designs. It has hundreds of micro glass beads painstakingly restrung by hand from antique beads from the early part of the 19th century. It is composed of 26 large spheres in a rainbow of colors.
They measure 17mm to 18.3 mm
The Wiener Werkstatte( insignia on the second photo) opened in 1903, was an association of , architects, artists, and designers that created, fashion, silver, paintings and furniture. It evolved from the Vienna Succession and was the pioneer of modern design. Successful at the onset, they opened their workshop in Vienna( Wiener Werkstatte) and soon expanded to several countries including the US. The shops included NYC and Berlin. Sadly, following the Great Depression, the business was forced to close in 1932 and the association declared bankruptcy.
Those of you who know me personally know I have a similar necklace and it has become my signature. It is just so beautiful, and blends with patterns and almost every color. So, yes it is one of my favorite pieces enjoyed for many years.
This necklace is available and was purchased in Vienna.
There is a wonderful book “ Wiener Werkstatte “ written by Gabrielle Fahr-Becker. The second photo, is the cover of the book.
