We recently replaced the old rusted chase cover on the left with a new shiny stainless steel one. Chase covers are one of those things not many people notice on their house, but it normally is an issue. When houses are built, contractors will use cheaper galvanized metal covers to save money. While they do the job for a while, they will begin to rust and will eventually let water seep through. Many times we replace chase covers to find mold within the chase or insulation that has gotten wet, heavy, and fallen down onto the unit. We replace all of our chase covers with stainless steel. Today we installed this new Lopi wood-burning insert with a custom-sized surround and the universal face in this masonry fireplace and chimney system. This customer called us this winter for a cleaning. We found a slammer unit installed (a wood insert without a properly sized stainless steel liner). During the cleaning we found that the customer had a significant chimney fire. A large amount of burnt creosote was removed! After the cleaning we performed a full inspection of all components and found multiple cracked and broken flue tiles. This chimney had a basketball-sized hole right in the middle of it that the customer wasn’t aware of! Luckily they called us! Today we removed the damaged liner and installed a new zero-clearance insulated stainless steel liner to this beautiful new insert. We also relined their water heater to the proper size.
