Extreme heat is tough on gardens — but the right watering routine makes a huge difference. 🌿

The biggest mistake we see? Quick, shallow watering. Plants do much better with slow, deep soaking at the root zone, especially during a heat wave.

Save this post for the next hot stretch, and check your containers, hanging baskets, and new plantings first — they dry out the fastest.

For best results, plant them where they’ll get **morning sun and afternoon shade**, especially in our hot Maryland summers. Think east-facing beds, porch edges, woodland borders, or bright protected spots.

Avoid hot, dry, full-afternoon-sun locations if you want happier leaves and better blooms.

Oakleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea quercifolia) are stunning, multi-season shrubs native to the Southeastern U.S. They are prized for their signature deeply lobed, oak-like leaves, large cone-shaped summer blooms, fiery autumn foliage, and attractive, peeling winter bark.
Key Features
Four-Season Interest:
Summer: Massive, 8- to 12-inch pyramidal clusters of white flowers emerge, which eventually fade to shades of pink, rose, or tan as they age.
Autumn: The dark green leathery leaves turn brilliant shades of red, bronze, and purple.
Winter: Striking, cinnamon-brown exfoliating (peeling) bark provides textural interest even when the plant is completely bare.
Size: Standard varieties generally grow between 4 to 8 feet tall and wide.

How to Grow & Care
Light: They thrive in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates (like Maryland), they prefer afternoon shade to protect the foliage from scorching.
Soil: They prefer organically rich, moist, but well-drained soil. They are moderately tolerant of clay and urban soils, but good drainage is key to preventing root rot.
Pruning: Oakleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood. You should only prune immediately after the flowers fade in mid-to-late summer. Pruning too late in the year will cut off next year’s blooms.
Hardiness: They are incredibly tough and heat-tolerant, thriving in USDA zones 5 through 9.
