Blackberry Ridge Woolen Mill, LLC

Blackberry Ridge Woolen Mill, LLC Blackberry Ridge Woolen Mill is a woolen yarn manufacturer that does custom wool spinning as well as spinning wool into yarn with our own unique character.

Our main website is blackberry-ridge.com A family-owned spinnery located in the hills of Vermont Township in south central Wisconsin. We provide wool processing services to customers from all over North America and natural fiber yarns and knitting supplies to hand knitters all over the world. We feature our own line of yarns using fibers grown in America that are spun, dyed and hand painted here a

t our mill. Our yarns are made from Merino (white) and Corriedale (gray) wool from sheep flocks grown here in the midwest. The fiber is spun using a woolen process, which produces wonderfully soft, warm lofty yarns. We also offer several additional yarns spun elsewhere from fibers that our machinery can’t process, such as the machine washable yarns.

Sunday March 15th was the beginning of an ice and snow storm that lasted through the morning on Monday. We had a fair bit of ice collect on the tree branches but never lost power due to falling branches on the power lines. The snow that followed coated the windows as it blew around. On Monday, no school, no travel advised, no work. Here is a pic of the ice as it melted and re-froze off the mill roof. It has been a long time since we have had weather like this.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of our first Sock of the Month pattern collection by Mary Dominski. This collection was inspired by the book Folk Socks by Nancy Bush which brought many knitters out of "retirement" with patterns for small projects (socks) that they actually got done. Mary went on to design many more sock patterns over the next few years. Although we no longer put together kits for these socks, the patterns are still available on our web site: www.Blackberry-ridge.com. April was most popular of these patterns with the sheep on the cuff, April being a common month for shepherds to plan for lambing.

Last week our carding machine told me that it needed to be cleaned. I had been putting it off since It is a lot of work to do that. Earlier today, I was watching a video cast from another mill where they made a comment about how much work it was for them to clean their single breaker card. Ours has 4 breakers. We put a lot of wool through our card before cleaning which is why we sometimes have a long turn around time between processing colored wool and white wool. Here are some pictures of what it takes to get the first breaker clean. One is at the beginning of the process and the second near the end. It took many hours to clean spread out over several days, but it is now finished!

Happy New Year!
We are continuing to fill in/update our web page with items that were left out during the shift to a new provider. Pictured here is a sport weight rag yarn spun from local Corriedale fleeces. For this rag, we plied a dark gray yarn with a medium gray yarn to give a subtle heather to the finished product. The lighter shade of gray is from older sheep (sheep get gray with age much like humans). This results in a yarn that is more rustic, smoother and tougher than the merino yarns that we produce. These are put up in 4 oz skeins with about 325 yards/skein. Wishing you happy knitting in the new year.

After a pleasant Thanksgiving weekend, it will be back to work on Monday, December 1st which is hard to believe. Saturday we had snow big time, and we got a little dyeing done. Here is a pic of the last 2 jobs that will get mailed tomorrow. These are the last of the orders that we took over the open house weekend, but were low on stock. Shown here are 2 colors of our sport weight 25% silk blend yarns, one of my favorites! Happy Knitting.
