This week I attended the International Window Coverings Expo, held in Raleigh this year. This is the exhibit hall filled with vendors booths, as well as an education station called Artisan Atelier with demonstrations of workroom techniques and products. I always come home full of excitement about the new things I've learned and new advancements in the window Covering industry.

It's always gratifying to strip a chair and find this sign of good quality - hand tied springs. Yes, you can buy a new furniture for less than the price of reupholstery, but you probably won't get the same quality. If you have a good, solid piece of furniture that sits comfortably and fits your space, the investment in recovering it is worth it. Plus, there are so many more fabric options to create a cohesive design with the rest of the decor in the room.

These were the last window treatments we made for a family before a house fire caused structural damage that forced them to tear down and rebuild. Fortunately they were able to save a lot of their furniture and draperies. We made some adjustments in width and length to fit windows that were a different size, and now these beauties grace the upper landing in their new home.

Our client had a pair of these antique armchairs in her living room that had come from her great-aunt's estate. When it was time for a refresh of the room with some new window treatments, the chairs needed reupholstering also. On installation day, I showed her the picture I took showing the original color exposed once the gimp trim was removed. She had no idea the chairs had once been blue. The after shows how stunning a modern pattern looks on the carved wood frames. What a transformation!

Hanging drapery panels above the window and closer to the ceiling creates the illusion of height and makes the windows appear larger. If there is a large space above the windows, faux Roman shades can camouflage this and make the windows look taller than they actually are.

A little trick of the trade to tame unruly tassel fringe - hit it with a little steam and gently comb it to smooth it down.

Just a heads up for anyone that may be planning to stop by. The front of the store is blocked by roofers replacing shingles on the awning, but you are welcome to come in through the back door. And here in the south, we all know that back door friends are best!
