🐾 KITTEN STORY - PART 4 🐾
Last Sunday morning Shane and I headed to Kenton to pick up the kitten condo.
And finally, after several days of emails, phone calls, spreadsheets, vet quotes, frustration, and more than a few tears... I met Shannon.
The funny thing is, I was driving to Kenton thinking I was picking up a cage. What I was actually picking up was HOPE.
The kitten condo was exactly what I had been looking for. A safe place where the kittens could spend time at Old Tin Cup, meet people, be socialized, and maybe someday decide retail is their true calling. 😹
But the bigger gift wasn't the cage. It was being reminded that there are still people out there who lead with kindness. People who hear a problem and immediately start thinking about solutions. People who simply ask, "How can I help?"
The kittens are now scheduled for their speuters through the Hardin County Humane Society program, and their first vet visit is next Wednesday at TAHO. They will be about 8 weeks old. We have a LONG relationship with TAHO, they were the most affordable option we found, and I have a deep respect for their mission.
By Thursday, the kittens were settled into their new condo at the shop, greeting people and being utterly adorable.
And then something else wonderful happened. Customers started hearing the story. People started asking questions. People started wanting to help.
As of today, these three little freeloaders have already raised $121 for the Hardin County Humane Society. That's enough to cover FOUR spay/neuter surgeries. Four. In three days.
A week ago they were sitting in a box at the Mt. Victory drive-thru. Today they're helping other animals. So we're going to keep going.
Old Tin Cup is now accepting donations for the Hardin County Humane Society Pet Pantry and their low cost spay/neuter efforts.
Food, litter, supplies, monetary donations... every little bit helps.
The kittens will be at the shop meeting customers, causing chaos, and apparently fundraising. 😹
And Shannon... thank you. You thought you were loaning me a cage. What you really did was remind me why people help animals in the first place. And now, because you helped, we're going to help others. ❤️🐾

🐾 KITTEN STORY - PART 3 🐾

By Thursday, I was tired. Not because of the kittens. The kittens were doing exactly what kittens are supposed to do. Chaos coordinating our lives! I was tired because I had spent 2 days trying to find answers and still didn't have any. The reality of expenses for three unexpected kittens had hit hard. I had called EVERYWHERE. I had become aware of just how difficult affordable pet care has become and WHY there were stray cats everywhere.

I felt completely defeated.

Thursday morning, I left the kittens for the first time and went to the shop and THAT bothered me more than everything else. I was SAD. I didn't want them sitting at home all day. I wanted them with me.

I've always thought Old Tin Cup Antiques could use a shop cat someday. We have a 9,000-square-foot 1881 historic building. Surely the odds of 1 out of 3 deciding retail is their calling is pretty good. 😹

I started thinking... If I had a safe kitten condo, they could spend time at the shop. They could meet people, get socialized, experience the world. And maybe someday one of them would decide customers are their favorite thing.

So I started looking for a cage. Just a cage.

I reached out to the Hardin County Humane Society. I knew they no longer operate a shelter, They do not have the funding, but I thought maybe they might have an unused cage sitting somewhere. I sent a FB message and got an auto reply. You can see it below. But I saw someone actually read my message so I didn’t give up! Defeated or not I had a new mission! Cat Condo! I emailed.

And then something unexpected happened. A HELPER. She wrote back almost immediately. A volunteer named Shannon said they might have one. We started emailing back and forth trying to figure out schedules, but the shop got busy and emails weren't cutting it. So I finally asked, "Can you just call me?" And she did.
We talked about the cage. We talked about schedules. I explained that I lived an hour away and if I needed to come that evening, I would. I even offered to leave a deposit. And that's when Shannon said something I'll probably never forget. "You had me the moment you typed, 'WE ARE KEEPING THEM.'

Y'all... I don't know why that hit me so hard. I choked back tears. For days I felt like nobody was hearing that part. WE ARE KEEPING THEM. That was never the question. The question was simply how to navigate all the unexpected pieces that came with rescuing three kittens. For the first time in days, I felt like someone understood exactly what I was trying to do.

Then Shannon asked me what I was doing for vet care. And what started as a conversation about a cage turned into something much bigger. We talked about the quotes I had received. We talked about the challenges people face trying to get affordable care. We talked about rescue work.

We talked about the colony of cats I TNRed 20 years ago on our road. And somewhere in that conversation, something shifted. For the first time all week, I wasn't talking to someone who was giving me another phone number to call. I was talking to someone who was asking, "How can I help?"

And deeply, that's what I needed more than anything. A helper. And I found one…

More to come... ❤️🐾

🐾 KITTEN STORY - PART 2 🐾
As I said in Part 1... I did not think this through. 😹I saw those big blue baby-kitten eyes, and made a decision. They had a home.
Sunday and Monday were spent setting up safe spaces, introducing the kittens to our three rescue dogs, buying supplies, and enjoying the chaos that comes with three 7-week-old kittens.
The kittens settled in like they had always lived here. Playing, Wresteling, climbing everything. They discovered the scratchers, the cat tree, the go roundy ball, the dog beds, my lap, Shane's lap, and pretty much every other surface in the house. And I was feeling pretty good about my impulsive life choices.
Then Tuesday happened. The next step was vet care. I called my veterinarian's office to find out what it would cost to get three kittens fully vetted. Vaccinations. Exams. Testing. Boosters. Rabies shots. Spay and neuter surgeries.
The estimate I received left me absolutely floored. $2,976. 😳😳😳
I honestly thought they had made a mistake.
We haven't had kittens vetted and spayed or neutered in 20 twenty years. The number shocked me. I started calling around. I called veterinarians, rescues, low-cost clinics. I called anyone and everyone I thought might either provide affordable care or point me toward someone who could.
What I ended up with was a spreadsheet several pages long. After days of searching, the lowest quote I found through a vet office was around $1,500 for all three kittens. Now I was really shook. And suddenly something clicked.
If you've ever wondered why there are so many unwanted cats and kittens being born... This is part of the reason.
People want to spay and neuter but finding affordable care is incredibly difficult. The clinics that offer low-cost services are overwhelmed and overbooked. The rescues and shelters have no resources.
I went from thinking I was looking for a simple vet appointment to realizing I had stumbled into a much bigger problem. And I now knew It wasn’t just my problem. It was an everywhere problem. And I knew was there had to be someone out there kind enough to point me in the right direction.
I just had to find them…
More to come...

Well friends... I think it's finally time to tell you a story. 😹
Its been an interesting few weeks... and I'm not even kitten you!

Two Saturdays ago after work, I stopped at the Mt. Victory drive-thru. The guy working there had a box of kittens and was trying to find them homes. Like most small towns right now, our area is absolutely overflowing with cats and kittens. It's honestly heartbreaking.
He said, "Can I interest you in a kitten?"
I said, "A kitten?"
He replied, "Well... there's a few."
I immediately told myself, "DON'T LOOK IN THE BOX."

Now, before I continue, Shane and I had been talking for months about the Cat Distribution System. Our last cat passed away at 18½ years old in April of 2024, and we knew that someday we wanted a pair of young kittens that could grow up with our rescue dogs.

I wish I could tell you I carefully thought through the decision I made next.

I DID NOT. 😹

I got out of the car and looked in the box.
Three. THREE. Three baby kittens stared back at me with big blue baby-kitten eyes. IT WAS OVER.

A few minutes later, I was driving away from the drive-thru with an open box full of tiny furry velociraptors armed with needle claws. Only then did I text Shane.
"You're either going to love me or you're going to hate me. It could really go either way." His response? "Ok why."

Now, if you know me, you know that could have meant ANYTHING. I have a tendency to... DO THINGS. 😹Crazy things like buy an antique store and an 1881 building! 🤷‍♀️

Then I sent him a picture of the kittens that were already riding home with me.
His response? "Oh my."
He opened the picture and about 15 seconds later: "They're cute."
And then, two minutes later, came the text that told me exactly how this story was going to end... "We have litter."
Not "No." Not "Turn around." Not "Absolutely not."
Just... "We have litter."
At that point it was clear the kittens had a home. The perfect home.
But this is only the beginning of their story... and the beginning of a week that would send me down a path I never expected.
Just look at them Look at them! How could I say no?? Couldn't!

Stay tuned for part 2...
