Do you remember earlier this week I asked what your biggest challenge was in shopping vintage? Well, one friend said it was the fear that their house will just look old. That’s a legit concern and unless you are going for the “preserved in history” look, I think it’s safe to say no one wants that. Am I right?
To me, the most beautiful spaces are balanced…not too much of any one thing. Not too much old and not too much new. Sometimes we’re so scared of getting it wrong, we go the opposite way and end up looking like a furniture showroom. But I think blending new and old is the very best way to achieve a balanced, beautiful space.
Take this cozy reading spot. This is THE viral Walmart chair. I try to avoid anything viral but it is a steal for the price, scale and is every bit as comfy as it looks. A large scale swivel chair for under $300 is unheard of. No offense to Walmart (they have stepped up their game!), but I did not want this cozy office to look like it came out of a big box store so throw in a vintage lamp and mirror and there you go BALANCE.
Here are some other examples of balance…
• Antique table + more modern chairs (yet these chairs are still a Windsor style, just with a modern twist in shape and color)
• Antique side table + modern couch
• Vintage Lamp + modern paint + modern table+ vintage book for extra charm points
• New art+ Antique frame (and Hazel for extra cute points)
Does this help? The right vintage piece is really like a sprinkle of salt. It might be something as large as table or it could be a hardware change, one accent on a shelf or one little piece or art. It’s well worth the hunt!
PS Even if you don’t love the look of vintage in your home, I think we could all love the practicality. Bowls, glassware, serving pieces, napkins, frames, dishes… things that are practical and get used all the time. If they’ve lasted this long they’re got a lot more life in them!
