You either love them or hate them; there’s no middle ground. Lladro began producing porcelain items in 1953 in Almàssera, Spain. Founded by three brothers - Juan, José, and Vicente Lladro - the brand grew from a small, family-owned ceramic workshop into a world renowned porcelain brand. Their distinct toned pastel colors and single-firing method coupled with highly detail and artistic designs set Lladro apart from all others except maybe NAO which happens to be a sister company. I affectionately call NAO Baby Lladro because the artist they use often go through a training period there before the are employed by Lladro. NAO figures do not command the same price as Lladro pieces do. These Lladros and others can be found at Coast to Coast Antiques Gallery in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Fabulous Fenton Glass:

With a respectable history Fenton Glass created a wide variety of quality products for over a century (1905-2011). From its humble beginnings in Ohio Fenton moved to West Virginia. Innovative original pieces were produced that rivaled some of the finest companies in the world and Fenton established itself as a leading manufacturer.

In the 1970s Fenton like many of its peers fell on hard times. George Fenton made a bold decision to find a new market and reacquaint Fenton Glass to a new generation. He loaded up his station wagon and drove to Florida. He set up a table of his company’s pieces and became one of the first sellers on the newly formed QVC. The gamble worked Fenton attracted a new generation of collectors.

I once had a customer tell me that he didn’t collect anything - he couldn’t see why his wife spent good money on glass. She had talked him into taking a tour of Fenton Glassworks with her. He was reluctant, he really didn’t want to go but it was for her so he did. He thought he’d be board. He wasn’t. He said listening to the guide and observing the skilled craftsmen go about their trade fascinating. He said he came out of the tour with respect. Going in he’d considered the glassware overpriced but coming out he wondered how they could sell their goods for such an affordable price.

All good things end and Fenton closed its doors in 2011. Coast to Coast Antiques Gallery recently purchased a Fabulous Fenton Glass collection with over 800 individual pieces that we’ll be offering over the next several months. Having priced and displayed 200 pieces these are the first to be offered. We are open 10-4 Wednesday-Saturday in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Today’s Find is a very nicely decorated Lipton Tea Tin from the 1920’s. It has all the elements of being a high priced desirable kitchen or advertising piece. A quick search yielded many examples of this item in the $30-60 range. Oh well, folks back then must have held on to them so they are plentiful today. This and other tins can be found at Coast to Coast Antiques Gallery in Myrtle Beach, SC
