Floor Talk Friday: Tile or Stone? What’s the Difference?

Welcome back to Floor Talk Friday!

This week, we're talking about something we hear quite a bit when customers are choosing materials: tile and stone. They can sometimes get lumped together, but they are actually very different materials, and understanding the difference can help you make a better choice for your space.

Shown here: Daltile Fonté
Heather Harbor Blend

So, what is the difference between tile and natural stone?

Tile is a manufactured product made from materials such as clay and other minerals. Ceramic and porcelain are two of the most common types of tile. Porcelain is a type of ceramic tile that is fired at a higher temperature and is generally denser and less porous, making it a popular choice for floors, bathrooms, showers, and other areas where durability and moisture resistance are important.

Natural stone is different because it comes from the earth. Materials such as marble, travertine, limestone, slate, and granite are cut and finished for use in homes. Each type of stone has its own characteristics, including variations in color, movement, texture, and porosity.

That natural variation is one of the things people love about stone. You aren't getting a manufactured pattern designed to look like stone. You're getting an actual piece of the material, with characteristics that developed naturally.

Tile can offer something different. Modern manufacturing allows tile to replicate the appearance of wood, stone, concrete, marble, and other materials while offering the performance characteristics of the specific tile product. This gives homeowners a huge range of options when it comes to style.

Does that mean tile is better than stone?

Not necessarily.

It really depends on the space, the look you're after, how the room will be used, and what type of care you're comfortable with. Different types of natural stone can have different care and sealing requirements, while tile products can have their own maintenance considerations as well. The specific product matters, which is why we always recommend looking at more than just the color or pattern.

Installation matters, too. The material you choose is only part of the finished floor. Proper substrate preparation, the right setting materials, appropriate grout, layout, and installation methods all play a role in how the finished floor performs.

And one of the best things about having options is that you don't necessarily have to choose between beauty and practicality. There are tile and stone products available for everything from a relaxed coastal home to a dramatic statement bathroom or a high traffic vacation rental.

At Stellar Tile & Flooring, we carry a wide variety of tile and natural stone options, and we're happy to help you compare materials and find something that makes sense for your space.

Hi neighbors! We wanted to take a minute to remind everyone that we’re here in the Outer Banks and ready to help with your next flooring, tile, or remodeling project.

We’re Stellar Tile & Flooring, a locally owned flooring and tile company with our showroom right here in Nags Head. If you haven’t met us yet, we’re in Nags Head near Fresh Market or Grits Grill and we help homeowners, contractors, builders, designers, and property owners figure out what to put on their floors, walls, countertops, and showers.

We work with all kinds of projects, big and small. That might mean replacing the flooring in a vacation rental, updating a bathroom, picking out tile for a new shower, replacing carpet before the next rental season, installing LVP throughout a home, or helping you find the right countertop for a kitchen renovation.

We can help you:
• Choose flooring that makes sense for an Outer Banks home
• Find tile for kitchens, bathrooms, showers, and backsplashes
• Pick flooring that can stand up to rental properties and everyday life
• Compare products, brands, and price points
• Coordinate materials for remodeling projects
• Handle measurements and installation
• Work with your contractor, builder, designer, or other trades when a project has a lot of moving parts

We’re a small local business, and we really value being able to work with people in our own community. We know that remodeling a home can be overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to make a lot of decisions at once. Our goal is to make the flooring and tile part of it a little easier.

If you’re planning a project now, thinking about one for later, or just have a question about what might work best in your home, give us a call or stop by the showroom. We’re always happy to talk through a project, even if you’re still in the “I have absolutely no idea where to start” stage.

Floor Talk Friday: Hardwood Flooring

Welcome back to Floor Talk Friday!

This week, we’re talking about a flooring option that has been around for generations and still manages to make a space feel timeless: hardwood.

Shown here: Hardwood
Artisan Walnut Herringbone | Natural

There is something special about real hardwood flooring. The natural variation, texture, and character can bring warmth to a room in a way that is difficult to replicate. With so many species, colors, finishes, plank sizes, and installation patterns available, hardwood does not have to look traditional. It can be classic, coastal, modern, or anything in between.

Herringbone, like the Artisan Walnut shown here, is one way to give hardwood a little more personality. The pattern adds visual interest while still keeping the warmth and character of natural wood.

But there is something we really want customers to know when they start shopping for hardwood: not all hardwood flooring is made the same way.

Engineered hardwood is still real wood. It has a real wood surface over a constructed core, but the thickness and construction of that wood top layer can vary considerably from product to product. Some engineered hardwood has a substantial wear layer that may allow the floor to be sanded and refinished in the future, while other products have a thinner top layer and are not designed to be sanded and refinished in the same way.

Some of the products we offer are even available in both engineered and solid hardwood. That means you may be able to get the same or a very similar look in two different constructions, depending on what makes the most sense for your home and installation.

“Pre-finished” is another term worth understanding. A prefinished floor has its finish applied at the factory before it arrives at your home, rather than being finished on site after installation. Being prefinished does not automatically tell you whether a floor can be refinished later. The construction and thickness of the real wood wear layer are important.

This is one of those areas where it pays to look beyond the sample. Two floors can both be called engineered hardwood while offering very different construction, refinishing options, warranties, performance, and price points.

Hardwood can be a great long term investment when the right product is chosen for the space and properly cared for. With proper maintenance, many hardwood floors can last for decades, and depending on the product and construction, may be able to be refinished as they age.

Here on the Outer Banks, moisture and humidity are also important considerations when selecting flooring. Hardwood is a natural material, so the environment it is installed in matters. Choosing the right product, preparing the space properly, and following the manufacturer's installation and care recommendations are all important parts of getting the best performance from your floor.

That does not mean hardwood cannot work beautifully in an Outer Banks home. It just means we want to make sure the flooring is appropriate for the space and the way the home is used.

One of the things we love about flooring is that there is rarely one “best” option for everyone. What works beautifully in one home may not be the right choice for another.

At Stellar Tile & Flooring, we carry a wide variety of flooring options and can help you compare hardwood, engineered hardwood, LVP, tile, carpet, and more to find something that fits your home, your lifestyle, and your space.

Floor Talk Friday: Is LVP Really Waterproof?

Welcome back to Floor Talk Friday!

Today we're talking about one of the biggest reasons LVP has become such a popular flooring choice: moisture.

We get questions about this all the time, especially here on the Outer Banks, so let's talk about what “waterproof” actually means when you're looking at luxury vinyl flooring.

Shown here: Mannington Floors ADURA® Rigid Luxury Vinyl
Swiss Oak | Almond

Many of the LVP products we carry are designed to handle everyday moisture and offer excellent durability, stain resistance, and wear resistance. We carry a wide variety of products from manufacturers including Mannington, Mohawk, Daltile, COREtec, and many others. Many of these products also come with manufacturer warranties, which can provide some additional peace of mind when you're making a flooring investment.

But there is an important distinction when it comes to the word “waterproof.” When a flooring product is described as waterproof, that refers to the flooring itself. It does not mean that everything underneath and around the floor is waterproof too. Your subfloor, walls, and the rest of the floor assembly are still affected by moisture, which is why proper installation and moisture management are so important. Waterproof flooring is a great feature, but it is not a substitute for a properly prepared and installed floor.

Another thing we always encourage customers to do is read the warranty for the specific product they are considering. Most of us don't think about warranties until something goes wrong, but they can tell you a lot about what a manufacturer stands behind and what conditions apply. Warranties can vary from one product to another, even within the same category, so it is worth taking a few minutes to understand what you're purchasing.

Maintenance matters too. Different flooring products can have different care requirements, including which cleaning products are recommended. A cleaner that is appropriate for one floor may not be the right choice for another, so following the manufacturer's care instructions is always a good idea.

The good news is that modern LVP can be an incredibly practical flooring option. For busy households, beach homes, vacation rentals, kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas that see a lot of everyday activity, the combination of durability and moisture resistance can make a lot of sense.

So, is LVP waterproof?

For many products, yes. But there is more to choosing a good LVP than just looking for the word “waterproof.” The specific product, installation, warranty, and care all matter when it comes to how your floor performs over time.

At Stellar Tile & Flooring, we carry a wide range of LVP options and can help you compare them based on your home, your lifestyle, and how you actually use the space.

Hey guys, it’s Sheila!

Just a quick heads-up about our schedule over the next few days.

Today, Thursday, I’ll be leaving a little early around 3:00 PM to head to the middle school open house.

Monday is the first day of school, so I’ll be in and out throughout the day taking care of all the first day-of-school errands. If you need me, just give me a call before you stop by. I can likely meet you at the showroom and help you out.

I’m also really thankful to have a boss who gives me the flexibility to be more involved in my kids’ lives and be there for these important moments. It means more than I can say. ❤️

Thanks for understanding while we get the kids settled into another school year!
