Woodworking Wednesday: Why wood choice matters

Picking the right wood changes everything—not just how it looks, but how it lasts.

Here's what I reach for most:

🪵 **Walnut** – Dark, rich, ages beautifully. This is the heirloom wood.
🪵 **Maple** – Hard and smooth. Takes daily use without complaining.
🪵 **Cherry** – Warm tones that deepen over time. It gets better as it ages.

I can work with most quality hardwoods—if you have something specific in mind, just ask.

Every piece of wood has a story. So does every maker.

Family Woodcraft started with a simple question: What if faith, craft, and function could come together in everyday pieces?

We build custom home decor, charcuterie boards, floating shelves—things that hold memories and honor moments. We also create printable art (personalized designs, custom prints) and custom wood frames to make them heirloom-worthy.

It's handmade. It's intentional. It's rooted in something bigger.

Right now:
🪚 Planning a custom sign design (walnut, hand-routed text, lots of meaning).
🖼️ Designing new printable art (scripture + custom pieces).
🖼️ Sketching custom wood frames to pair with those prints.
☕ Drinking too much coffee and leaving sawdust everywhere.

Created two of these chessboards as gifts for our son and our future son-in-law for Christmas. The playing board is comprised of 2" squares made from Wenge and Birdseye Maple. The border is made from Zebrawood.
