The Good Earth Garden Stand will be open as usual over the Memorial Day weekend. However, the bakery will not be open because we are heading north for the Cobbscook Bird Festival. I did bake many cookies today and they will be on the stand.

We have stocked the stand with seedlings for those gardens you will be planting over the holiday😃. Tomatoes (Big Beef and Sungold cherry), Peppers (Sweet and hot), Onion plants, Leeks.

There are perennial herbs and flowers in $6 pots-- I just added 4 Trumpet Vines today. We also have Lemon Balm, Mugwort, Catnip, Apple Mint, Valerian, Forget me Nots...

I'll be back in the kitchen next weekend with a full menu of bakery items--- thanks to the voters of Naples who rejected the proposed limitations on the Food Sovereignty Ordinance.

Happy Memorial Day all!

Thank you to all who went to the Naples polls and voted NO on Question 10. The revision to the Food Sovereignty Ordinance did not pass and farmstands in Naples will be able to continue to offer prepared foods like baked goods, quiche, salads and sandwiches! Yay Naples!

Some of you may have heard about the proposed changes to the Naples Food Sovereignty Ordinance that will be on the ballot at the Town Hall on Tuesday May 19 (Question 10). Some of the producers in Naples who will be affected by these changes are asking that Naples voters vote NO on Question 10 on May 19 (or drop by the Town office anytime this seek to fill out an absentee ballot).

In brief, the changes to the Naples Food Sovereignty Ordinance that was initially passed in 2020 will make it illegal for small food producers to sell "prepared foods" from our farmstands unless we have our kitchens licensed by the state. Although it is not defined in the Ordinance, I have been told that it includes food that is processed in a kitchen such as baked goods, salads, sandwiches, soups, etc. This would create financial and logistical barriers for small farmers and food producers and diverges from the spirit of the Maine Food Sovereignty Act. These changes are unnecessary as there was not problem with the way things were working and our community seemed to appreciate access to fresh local and affordable prepared food.

For those of you who are new to the idea of Food Sovereignty, it is a global movement to support local food production and to support the de-industrialisation of our food system. Maine passed the Food Sovereignty Act in 2017 which made it possible for towns to pass ordinances that create exemptions from state regulation for farmers, gardeners and other local food producers who sell directly to their customers. An example that many people are familiar with is the sale of raw milk from dairy farms if the sale is made directly between the producer and the consumer (usually at their homesteads). The idea is that farmers and food producers should be able to sell directly to their customers and people should be able to make a choice to buy food from their community members without state involvement or regulation. The result is support for small scale food growers and producers, increased local control and personal responsibility, healthier food choices, and rural economic development.

Please spread the word and get out to vote on or before Tuesday May 19 and VOTE NO ON QUESTION 10. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you!

We are going full tilt in the garden this week. Two truckloads of manure carted down the hill to the gardens, early seeds sown, broccoli, Brussels sprout, and lettuce seedlings planted....

The seedlings are getting hardened off outside so lots of carrying trays of plants in and out of the greenhouse. And of course everything needs watering.... such fun. Onion seedlings and perennial herbs will be at the stand this weekend with more veggie seedlings starting next weekend.

The bakery is open tomorrow and Saturday. Blueberry/raspberry mini pies, German Chocolate cake, peanut butter cookies, sourdough rustic loaves, Challah loaves, muffins, cinnamon swirl scones, and all the usual jams, pickles, mustard, maple syrup and MORE.

The herbal apothecary has teas, tinctures, salves, bug repellent, soaps and MORE. Great gifts for Mom!
