#3 Laurie is discussing designing a room to feel intentional.

One of the things I love most about custom window treatments, explains Laurie, is that they completely change the way a room feels without necessarily being the first thing you notice.

The room is beautiful and you can’t even pinpoint why. That, to me, is the mark of a successful design, says Laurie. A well-designed room is rarely about one spectacular element. It’s about the relationships between all the elements, the way color speaks to color, how textures balance one another, how patterns are repeated or contrasted, and how scale, proportion, and placement create a sense of harmony. Custom window treatments become another opportunity to bring all those decisions together.

#2 In this series Laurie is discussing Texture and Movement:
Window treatments add softness, warmth, and another layer of personality to any room. They can have hard architectural lines, like shades and blinds, these make the space feel finished, inviting, and collected. They can be soft treatments or drapery panels which add framework and color to the room bringing the entire design together.

Let’s begin this series with Laurie discussing #1 scale & proportion.

This is the most important aspect for Laurie when she begins a new project.

The right drapery or shade can make windows feel larger, ceilings feel taller, and the entire room feel more balanced.

As a designer, Laurie is always looking at scale and proportion because even the most beautiful room can feel “off” when those two things are not correct.

Placement, length, fullness, and fabric all interconnect to fabricate the best window treatment outcome.

Laurie shares that making the windows look larger, ceiling feel taller and lastly custom window treatments help the furniture feel properly connected to the room.

From a designer’s point of view, custom window treatments are about so much more than simply covering a window. Custom window treatments can completely change how a room feels.

Over the next several weeks Laurie is going to share her views on the 3 things she considers important when designing window treatments for her clients. What better time of year than Fall to be ready to gather with family and friends in style in your home.

Laurie’s most successful designs use these accents in moderation and with purpose. Coordinating trims, tassels, and cording with the room’s color palette and furnishings creates a sophisticated, unified look that enhances both the window treatments and the overall interior design. Besides being her signature addition to details, the trims allow for balance of the colors and materials Laurie has selected throughout the room, making the space feel more harmonious and intentional

Velvet is a timeless fabric that has remained a design favorite for generations because it combines elegance, comfort, and rich visual appeal. Laurie often chooses traditional, classic fabrics like velvet to introduce vibrant color into a room without sacrificing sophistication or longevity.
