A new kitchen with a much older soul. 🤎 Reclaimed wood wraps the cabinetry and architecture, a handmade metal hood feels as though it could have always belonged there, and honed black soapstone brings a quiet, utilitarian weight to the room. Even with all the modern conveniences required of a kitchen built for a crowd, the goal was for nothing to feel too polished or freshly installed. ⁠

For our Gathering Barn project, the architecture gave us plenty to respond to: soaring ceilings, exposed timber, expansive windows, and a monumental stone fireplace. Rather than relying on one oversized seating arrangement, we created several zones that allow the room to work just as well for a handful of people as it does for a crowd. ⁠

Here, this large-scale painting brings movement, color, and an almost limitless sense of depth to an otherwise intimate corner. Rather than competing with it, the furnishings respond quietly: an olive velvet chair picks up the earthier tones within the canvas, while stacks of books and a small side table give the vignette the familiarity of a place actually used. ⁠

At the library of our Clearview project, the bookcases, paneled walls, and coffered ceiling create a continuous framework around the room, making it feel intimate despite the amount of visual information within it. A patterned frieze at the top of the walls provides a transition between all that warm wood and the ceiling, making for a room that has been lived in, added to, and returned to again and again. ⁠

September brought an unexpected swiftness to fall, along with plenty of reasons to pause and appreciate what we’ve been working toward. 🤎 Our Gathering Barn project found its way into the pages of RUE, respectively, giving us the opportunity to revisit a home with stories we’re especially proud to share.

Meanwhile, progress continued at our Franklin Farmhouse and West Meade projects, and Roger found time for a few industry gatherings along the way.

A month of celebrating completed chapters while continuing to write the next ones.

For the primary bath at our Clearview project, that picture was the white-marble luxury of a grand old hotel- a reference both we and our clients loved. From there, the idea was carried all the way through: marble envelops the room and gives its traditional architecture a sense of permanence, while a freestanding tub and warm metal fittings bring contrast to the cool stone. ⁠

In the primary bedroom at our Clearview project, the architecture, the garden beyond the windows, and the couple’s own furnishings gave us our cues. A muted green wraps the walls and trim, carrying the landscape indoors even through the quieter months, while damask drapery, a vintage nightstand, and pieces that have long belonged to the owners give the room its sense of continuity. ⁠
