A new home is easy. A new home that has soul, that’s the difficult part.

That’s the part I love.

I’m Marie-Joe, the Founder and Principal Designer of JFY Designs here in Nashville. I’ve spent my life around storied design. I’m always chasing that feeling, a space that doesn’t just look beautiful, but holds a memory.

Proof that toy storage can be as beautiful as it is practical. This custom playroom features a wall of floor to ceiling cabinetry for endless organization, complete with a rolling library ladder for easy access to all treasures. We had so much fun dreaming up this design with our clients. Why didn’t I think of this when my kids were growing up?! :)

The client brief: driving through the Irish countryside, you suddenly happen upon an old home. That’s the feeling we want.

Most new builds don’t have a North Star like that. Many clients come with a Pinterest board and a wish list. This one came with a memory. And a memory, to me, is a better brief than any moodboard I’ve ever been handed.

This is the kind of project where everything must earn its way into the plan. Stone, plaster, paneling, wallpaper - there is very little drywall when you are crafting a new home that feels like an old home. The floating treads on the stairs were crafted from an old walnut tree on the property. We found so many antiques for this home, interweaving their stories into our client’s very personal one.

In the end, the devil is in the details.
