Can anybody name this springtime visitor to feeders? Better yet, how many of you have seen one of these this year?

Rose-breasted Grosbeaks are a migratory visitor to seed feeders each year from mid April to mid May. If you want to attract these beauties on their journey north from Central and South America, a seed feeder is the best way to do it! Fortunately for us, they aren’t picky. Offerings of Sunflower, Safflower, or our blends are all great options for drawing these birds to feeders. We’ve been hearing more and more reports of them, so make sure your feeders are clean, filled with fresh seed, and let us know if you see any!

Right on time! The first Rose-breasted Grosbeak of the spring this morning at home in Pegram. This, of course, is the male while females are brown and white with a very prominent white eyebrow stripe.
Have your feeders ready and fully loaded because these guys are hungry as they migrate.
In all we can see these birds through April and part of May.

Cardinals have once again selected this boxwood to build their nest in. A clutch of 3 eggs is typical, but 4 or 5 is possible. I'll be keeping an eye on it and will share a report in a few days.

Nesting bluebirds update: 6 babies are now 11 days old and the parents are making feeding trips at a tremendous pace. I anticipate a Friday or Saturday fledging.
And I'm very excited to see chickadees chose one of the other bb boxes in my yard. Chickadees are extremely cautious around their nest site and will not enter the box if I am in the general area. They will dive in without even perching for a moment as soon as I walk away. Chickadees use primarily moss for nest material, then line it with animal hair. Their eggs are tiny, about a 1/2 inch in length, and are creamy white with reddish brown blotches.
Chickadees tend to nest just once a season so please don't interfere with their nest in an effort to assist bluebirds. We here this from people all too often

The bluebird chicks hatched this past Friday and today I had an opportunity to take a peek and a picture. The female had flown from the box and out of sight. Perfect time to monitor. The chicks look great and will be quiet warm all huddled together. Stay tuned for updates.

Many of you have asked what kind of box the 6 bluebird eggs are in. Of the 4 choices in my yard they chose, of course, the acorn birdhouse. Bluebirds have used it many many times in the 25 years I've had it. Just goes to show bluebirds don't always choose the most ideal set up.

On March 6th I posted a picture of the 1st bluebird egg of the year and predicted there would be 5. I was wrong. There's 6! The female likely began incubating on the 12th or 13th which means babies should be hatching around the 27th. Stay tuned for baby pictures.

While walking a field yesterday afternoon a Kildeer
startled me as it scurried away to my left. I stopped and started looking on the ground for a nest. There it was just a few feet away. Killdeer nest on the ground and are quite camaflouged.
Killdeer babies immediately start walking when they hatch.

I'm proud to announce we have our first Bluebird egg of the season! There's been a complete nest for at least 3 days and this morning I saw the female fly out of the box. So I immediately went to investigate.
How many will she lay?
I'm guessing 5. We'll see in a few days.
