Weaver Jane has done it again, weaving a small froggy mouth purse on the double-warped boomloom. I have uploaded my short reel about doubleweave to our youtube channel, @ theboomloom, and included the steps to make a tube in the description. After removing her piece from the loom Jane cleverly joined one end by tying the warp ends together. You all make cool stuff faster than I can keep up but making a longer guide to projects is one of the goals!!! thank you for sharing, always love to see anything you make. xox

hey fam, you might have seen me share some process pics from this public art project Krolak & Ries, here is a little more about it. Swipe through, I am using the nifty new multiple caption option

The project is a community artwork to quilt and weave a sunshade for a public spot

“Commissioned by the Town of Ashland, 2b: Behovely Beshielding invites community members to participate in the creative process in three ways:

1. Donating pre-loved cotton t-shirts

2. Meeting us at the Corner Spot during public “studio hours” and/or

3. Attending workshops where we cut the t-shirts into strips and/or take turns on Boom Looms to weave sections.

The colorful, interstitial, woven pieces are metaphors for community collaboration, personal and community repair, and the diverse experiences of people in Ashland."

Karen Krolak, who created the project with her partner Jason Ries, told me that one of the goals is to create a way for people to sit together, work on something together, without screens, and with their hands – things we don't always focus on today. She said when her parents and brother were killed in a car accident in 2012, the community in and around Ashland were a source of great care and kindness for her, and part of this project is to create that same spirit of kindness, a way to care for each other and our communities.

YES. It feels like the biggest privilege that boomloom gets to be a part of this project, and all the projects, everything you all create and share with me and with each other -- making something real and lovely where there wasn't anything before.

Keep going friends, in whatever way you go, this is such good work that is happening here. xox

Part 1. Earlier this summer Renata, who blogs as StringThings Winnipeg, wrote me about this review she had posted on her blog. It's so great, so thorough and fun to read and full of the punchiest pieces she made while trying out the different bars. Renata also kindly and generously wrote up her different patterns and sent them to me to share, and I am using those to launch a library / showcase of user-created patterns on our site for anyone who wants to participate. happy summer
just wanted to say hi. hi! that's me and our table at the Wool Works festival in July
Boomloom is a small loom that makes big-loom patterns, we sell through our website, link in bio.

now! good things are afoot, we are going to be a part of New York Textile Month this fall and give a talk (!), more on that shortly. also boomloom has an intern this summer [noah why can't I tag you its not working] and he is amaze, helping me update & refresh our printed things, we are adding more informational pieces and tho the process is slow i think it's gonna be good. grateful for all your feedback, suggestions, ideas.
we will be at the Shenandoah Valley Fiber Festival in September! where I am hoping for big fall feelings.
also the new pattern bars shortly! or so they are telling me. also a new special shuttle needle designed by moi, we have it IN HAND actually, debuting soon

AND ALSO a dump of some seasonally appropriate photos new and old, boomloom in beast mode at the boardwalk, at the pool, at the flea. #8 egglesome modeling boomloom one of my alltime faves. and Cookie, number one studio assistant natch

summer has been hot and full of work but also some play and some super gratifying exchanges with you all, seeing your ideas and experiments and beautiful beautiful work. hang in there and keep making, always love to see anything you make. lots of love. xox BL

Anna Blanchette made a beautiful piece on the boss with sections woven "on opposites" on the diamond bar. you can too. the way I know how to do it is as follows:
With either the twill or diamond bar, as you weave, alternate every color A row with a color B row woven on the opposite bar position. So it would look like: position 1 color A, then position 3 color B. Position 2 color A, then position 4 color B. Position 3 A, position 1 B. And so on. When you want to make the x or diamond, just reverse the direction of color A and continue to alternate with B on the opposite position. 2 A, 4 B. 1 A, 3 B.

With this technique as the basis you can make so many cool effects by switching out colors, using it in sections like Anna, and even using 3 or more colors as Weaver Jane showed me and I did in the last slide...more on that soon

Been chatting with Weaver Jane about doublecloth on the boomloom ever since I noticed that you could warp it twice, with the pattern bar sandwiched in between, then use it like a simple kind of doubleweave -- like if you weave around and around through both sheds you get a tube...or if you only leave one side connected like a book then you can open the piece you make, and it is doublewide. you can't exchange the sheds like you can in true doublecloth but maybe there are some possibilities for fun times there? what do you think? swipe to see Jane's masterful experiments.
