Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile Louisiana's Oldest General Store celebrating 163 years! Located in historic downtown Natchitoches, Kaffie-Frederick has operated continuously for 159 years.

Five generations of the two families have overseen daily operations since 1863. As Louisiana's oldest general store, we feature everything you remember from the "good old days" like hardware, housewares, cookware and kitchen supplies, classic toys, and gifts. Our original elevator still works, as do our early 1900's cash registers. Our specialties are good old fashioned service and quality merchandise. That formula has worked for 159 years, so we pledge to continue it.

Have you ever stopped to read The Ten Cannots while visiting the store?

Displayed inside Louisiana's Oldest General Store is a copy of "The Ten Cannots," a well-known list of philosophical principles written in 1916 by the Reverend William J. H. Boetcker. More than a century later, these timeless words continue to spark reflection and conversation.

It's little pieces of history like this that make every visit to the store an opportunity to discover something new.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong
You cannot help mankind by tearing down big men
You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich
You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn
You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence
