Oi Giuliano Cecchinelli
During the NSI Study Tour in Vermont, one of the stops I was most excited about was Buttura & Gherardi in Barre.
I knew Giuliano Cecchinelli might be there.
And there he was, in the corner of the shop, quietly carving granite by hand.
I stayed and watched.
His bench tilted perfectly, his tools, his hands, the way he worked, (even the air vacuum)everything felt so authentic.
And yes… a little moody, very artist-like. Haha.
I remember thinking: this is live art.
The next day, at Hope Cemetery, I got to see his work.
Giuliano Cecchinelli.
Born in Carrara. The LAST, literally the last, Italian stone carver standing in Barre.
And seeing what those hands have created…WOW.
Just like music, art hits you different.
It hits me different.
Watching him work, then seeing his work the next day, felt almost like watching Michelangelo carve and then walking into the museum.
What a moment!
Fyi the car carved its not his work but still WOW!
